Abstract
This essay explores the ecological conditions of a flooded gravel pit in the Upper Rhine Plain in Germany through a reading of the relationship between selected multispecies inhabitants and the ground condition. Unpacking their stories allows reflection on the site’s changing nature. Rather than passively adapting to the anthropogenic environment of the mining site, the plants and animals actively realize a new, unique ecology. The essay proposes a new perspective on the nature of anthropogenic environments as co-produced by the multispecies communities they support rather than solely originating from human disturbance.
