Recently, researchers have proposed an innovative negative stiffness-based vibration control concept, namely the KDamper absorber. The envisaged mechanism comprises a combination of appropriate stiffness, damping and mass elements, including a negative stiffness element. Previous studies have formulated the mathematical framework of the system, as well as design and optimization algorithms. These take into consideration the application of interest and geometrical and manufacturing limitations, regarding the vibration control components, including the realization of the negative stiffness mechanics. The KDamper has been numerically and analytically implemented as a vibration control concept for seismic protection of bridges, buildings as well as wind turbines and noise mitigation panels, while results indicated its beneficial effect towards vibration attenuation. For the first time, an experimental set-up of the proposed mechanism is designed by adopting an optimization procedure and tested under horizontal harmonic and seismic shaking. Results highlight the vibration control properties of the proposed system and validate previous numerical and analytical studies. The experimental device serves as a proof of concept of the KDamper absorber and showcases its advantages as well as application limitations that should be considered in future research.

While techniques for assessing solar potential, particularly on roofs, are well-established, estimating solar potential on building facades often requires more work due to the complexity of urban features and the elaborate design of building facades. Existing methods to assess the solar potential of building facades often neglect the characteristics of individual facades. This study presents an image-based method for a more accurate estimation of the PV potential of facades. The proposed method is composed of four steps: (1) data acquisition, preprocessing, and manual labeling, (2) training a pixel-wise semantic image segmentation model based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), (3) color content analysis of segmented images, and (4) estimating the annual solar energy potential. We apply the proposed workflow to several buildings in Zurich, Switzerland, and evaluate segmentation quality and resulting changes in façade surface utilization factors. In a comparative analysis between the widely used web-based solar potential assessment tools, Sonnenfassade, Global Solar Atlas and the simulation software Climate Studio, we demonstrate the downstream impact of surface utilization factors on resulting solar potentials. Considerable deviations in façade availability for BIPV deployments among the various tools as compared to our segmentation approach indicate the potential impact of the proposed method on policy-making and the benefits for BIPV design and planning.

The authors present values and an application of a phase change dispersion, where the dispersed phase change material within water changes from solid to liquid while absorbing heat and changes from liquid to solid while releasing heat at constant temperature. The phase change enthalpy increases the "apparent specific heat capacity" significantly in comparison to water. As the heat transfer takes place at constant temperature, the heat transfer fluid itself remains at constant temperature while absorbing heat. Isothermal heating and cooling of devices with a liquid is feasible.
