Abstract
A pronounced deficit in precipitation in the summer and autumn of 2018 led to widespread and long-lasting drought in large parts of Switzerland, particularly in the north-eastern Central Plateau. The immediate and medium-term effects of the dry summer 2018 on growth, pest and disease infestation and ultimately on the survival of many trees were of a previously unseen extent in Swiss forests. Not only spruce, but also beech and mixed forests were affected. Regional and local differences were found, which also manifested themselves in the spatial expression of precipitation and soil dryness. The partly massive effects show that extreme events such as the dry year 2018 can play a central role in climaterelated changes in forest composition. From a scientific point of view, it is therefore necessary to draw as many insights and lessons as possible from these extreme events in order to be able to develop adequate, future-oriented forest management concepts. A research initiative of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL was launched with exactly this goal in the very short term during the summer of 2018. The present article summarizes important findings with regard to future forest development.
