Abstract

In this thesis project we developed an extension to the existing open-source disaster impact model CLIMADA. The new functionality enables model users to assess direct tropical cyclone risk of distinct sectors of the global economy separately. Furthermore and most importantly, it allows the analysis of indirect tropical cyclone risk arising from sector-sector interdependencies nationally, regionally and globally. For indirect risk estimation we implemented the Leontief and the Ghosh input-output models as well as an adapted version of the environmentally extended input-output analysis approach. Key strengths of the resulting model framework include its flexibility to cater to different user needs and its extendability with respect to future model development. Results at this stage require further testing and several key limitations have been identified which need be addressed in upcoming development stages. Nevertheless, a solid and fully functional foundation has been laid, providing previously not existing possibilities for global sectoral direct and indirect tropical cyclone risk estimation.
