Abstract
Universities across Europe are facing a multitude of challenges, requiring innovative and effective leadership. Given the rising demands and expectations of both internal and external stakeholders, holding a strategic leadership position within a university has become increasingly complex. In this context, institutional learning between universities is gaining importance. From 30 October to 1 November 2024, a senior delegation from the University of Zurich (UZH) and ETH Zurich visited the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of Denmark, the University of Gothenburg, and Chalmers University of Technology to explore governance and management practices in Northern European higher education institutions. Key insights included the professionalisation of leadership roles, strong alignment between strategic and operational levels, greater student involvement in governance, and robust financial accountability driven by lower core funding shares. These findings offer valuable impulses for the continued development of governance, leadership, and financial strategy at Swiss HEIs.
