Abstract

In this interview Margaret Crawford shares her experiences and research on public space. She became known with her examination of shopping malls, an essay that was published in Michael Sorkin's edited volume Variations on a Theme Park (1992). A few years later, however, she concluded that we was way to pessimistic about these malls - as she started to recognise and analyse public life both within the malls, as well as outside it, tracing how teenagers and families use the mall, as well as the phenomenon of garage sales and other street life. From there on, she discusses the current challenges in public space: the increasing privatisation and segregation, as well as increasing use of violence by police forces.
