Sunspot observations and glacier images

Historical series of observations and measurements are critical in modern climate research when it comes to the creation, validation and optimisation of models. Thanks to this need for historical data, new and intensive forms of cooperation between archives and researchers are emerging, not least at research institutions. To provide some insights into the practical work being done in the field, the following article discusses some current projects underway at the ETH Zurich University Archives and the ETH Library’s Image Archive. These projects focus on extensive historical sunspot observations and photographic series of Swiss glaciers. Through the close cooperation between archives, researchers and funding institutions, they are examples of how, particularly with in view of climate change, collections of great scientific relevance, can be stored, indexed, made accessible online, evaluated and communicated.
