Abstract
The chemiosmotic theory introduced by Mitchell describes coupling of exergonic and endergonic membrane reactions via a proton circuit. 1-3 Bacterial cells contain primary pumps within their membrane that pump protons from the cytoplasm to the environment at the expense of light or chemical energy. Examples of these primary energy converters are the photochemical reaction centers, bacteriorhodopsin, and the diverse respiratory chains. The electrochemical gradient of protons thus established provides the driving force for a number of energy-requiring processes catalyzed by protein complexes located within the cell membrane. Examples are the numerous H+-coupled transport systems, the synthesis of ATP by F1F0-ATPase, reversed electron transfer, NADPH synthesis from NADH by transhydrogenase, and the movement of the flagellar motor.
