To support research of high-current switching devices, suitable laboratory equipment is required. Today, new technologies such as switches for DC grids or with alternative switching gases are requested, and testing with other than sinusoidal current shapes would be of great help. Until now, no usable high-power current source is available that provides the needed versatility with respect to envisaged current shapes. To address the need of a new laboratory facility to characterise emerging technologies and plasma physical behaviours, ETH Zurich undertook the development of a flexible pulsed current source to supply arbitrarily shaped high-current pulses. The topology of the device is based on a prior source. However, the significantly increased demand on current, voltage levels and regulation dynamics originated a completely new development. The source has a system voltage of 10 kV and can output up to 24 kA nominal. It is achieved by a parallel arrangement of eight individually controlled buck converters (IGBT) and switchable energy-absorbing devices (MOV). This source can ramp up to the nominal current and down to zero within less than half a millisecond while maintaining an output current over several tens of milliseconds. This contribution presents the design of the source and its control, its realisation, and example measurements
