    Die Jahresstudie "Sicherheit", die von der Militärakademie an der ETH Zürich und dem CSS jeweils gemeinsam publiziert wird, dient der Ermittlung langfristiger Trends in der aussen-, sicherheits- und verteidigungspolitischen Meinungsbildung in der Schweiz. Sie basiert auf im Jahresrhythmus durchgeführten repräsentativen Befragungen. Auch 2019 fühlen sich die SchweizerInnen im Allgemeinen wieder sehr sicher. Befragte beurteilen die Zukunft der Schweiz optimistisch. Dabei nennen sie vor allem die gute Wirtschaftslage und das politische System der Schweiz als Gründe für ihre optimistische Zukunftseinschätzung. Die zukünftige Entwicklung der weltpolitischen Lage wird allerdings signifikant pessimistischer als noch im Vorjahr eingeschätzt. Die Auswertung der Gründe zeigt, dass in erster Linie die Machtpolitik der USA, China und Russland als Gefahr für die Welt gesehen wird.

    The annual survey «Sicherheit» evaluates long-term trends and tendencies in public opinion on foreign, security and defense policy issues in Switzerland. It is based on representative surveys conducted each year. As well as including a core set of questions that are always included or asked at irregular intervals, the survey also addresses current issues of security policy. In 2018, special attention was paid to the communication efforts of the army regarding a possible mandatory day of orientation for women as well as to the fight against terrorism.
  • Collecting Qualitative Data at Scale with Large Language Models: A Case Study

    Chatbots have shown promise as tools to scale qualitative data collection. Recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) could accelerate this process by allowing researchers to easily deploy sophisticated interviewing chatbots. We test this assumption by conducting a large-scale user study (n=399) evaluating 3 different chatbots, two of which are LLM-based and a baseline which employs hard-coded questions. We evaluate the results with respect to participant engagement and experience, established metrics of chatbot quality grounded in theories of effective communication, and a novel scale evaluating "richness"or the extent to which responses capture the complexity and specificity of the social context under study. We find that, while the chatbots were able to elicit high-quality responses based on established evaluation metrics, the responses rarely capture participants' specific motives or personalized examples, and thus perform poorly with respect to richness. We further find low inter-rater reliability between LLMs and humans in the assessment of both quality and richness metrics. Our study offers a cautionary tale for scaling and evaluating qualitative research with LLMs.

    Die Jahresstudie Sicherheit dient der Ermittlung langfristiger Trends in der aussen-, sicherheits- und verteidigungspolitischen Meinungsbildung in der Schweiz. Sie basiert auf im Jahresrhythmus durchgeführten repräsentativen Befragungen. Neben langjährigen Standardfragen werden jährlich ergänzende Themen aufgegriffen: Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wurde 2017 den sicherheitspolitischen Informationskanälen sowie der Social Media-Kommunikation und der Wahrnehmung des Terrorismus und dessen Auswirkung auf das Reiseverhalten geschenkt.
