Abstract
Candilis-Josic-Woods embodies like hardly any other
architectural practice in the post-war period the collec-
tive work of architects. During the joint creative phase
from 1954 onwards, countless residential buildings
were created in France, as well as urban projects
such as the former Université de Toulouse-Le Mirail
campus and educational buildings such as the Freie
Universität Berlin. In the perception based on the nar-
ratives of many contemporaries, the three partners are
often said to have employed a clear division of labor
: Georges Candilis was the persuasive businessman
who negotiated the contracts, Alexis Josic the talented
draftsman and Shadrach Woods the one who thought
through the theoretical foundations. At the same time,
the authorship of the end results is often associated
primarily only with Candilis.
The collaborative work and individual influence of
the three protagonists will be illustrated in this paper
by means of representative projects, revealing how
interwoven the joint oeuvre of the three architects is
and where, if at all, clear boundaries can be drawn in
their work. The content of this paper is based upon
extensive research on Georges Candilis presented in
the dissertation Les “vestiges” de l’opération Million dans
l’oeuvre de Georges Candilis – Actualités et stratégies de
sauvegarde pour un patrimoine de l’habitat économique
du second après-guerre (EPFL, 2019).
