Abstract

The experimental approach and analysis procedure has been established for measurements of conductance decay and post-arc current (PAC) in a puffer circuit-breaker test device. First results will be reported from thermal interruption tests in CO2, exhibiting reignitions caused by two distinct failure mechanisms: thermal and hot dielectric. The prevalence of hot dielectric failures in CO2 limits the ability to diagnose the PAC in thermally critical conditions, however the PAC measurements have been used to better understand the failure mechanism and to determine arc conductance near CZ. Critical values of the arc conductance and the arc voltage extinction peak necessary for successful interruption in CO2 will be reported with consideration to both failure mechanisms.
