Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid MechanicsÖttinger, Hans Christian (2008)We develop a description of wall slip within a systematic framework of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. Whereas the underlying ideas are completely general, the concrete formulation is given for a temporary network model of entangled polymer melts and fixed walls. A coupled set of time-evolution equations for carefully motivated bulk and boundary variables is obtained from thermodynamic building blocks, in particular, energy and entropy as the generators of reversible and irreversible dynamics. The boundary conditions for the bulk equations are obtained in terms of the evolving boundary variables. A Giesekus-type expression for the wall shear stress as a function of slip velocity and some simple estimates for the vastly different slopes of this function at low- and high-shear stresses are the main results of this paper. - Finite anisotropic elasticity and material frame indifference from a nonequilibrium thermodynamics perspectiveItem type: Conference Paper
Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid MechanicsHütter, Markus; Tervoort, Theo A. (2008)A closed set of Eulerian evolution equations for nonisothermal finite isotropic and anisotropic elastic behavior is derived using nonequilibrium thermodynamics. In particular, it is shown that to describe the state of elastic deformation, the deformation gradient F is preferred as internal variable to the more well-known left and right Cauchy-Green strain tensors. With the energy and entropy functions being frame invariant, the stress tensor expression as obtained in terms of F satisfies the principle of material frame indifference. As an alternative to the F-formulation, it is also shown how elasticity can be described in terms of the mass density and the isochoric deformation gradient, over(F, ̃) = F / root(det F, 3), instead. - The 6th international workshop on nonequilibrium thermodynamicsItem type: Journal Article
