  1. Measuring and modeling time use patterns in Switzerland

    Winkler, Caroline (2024)
As part of this dissertation, a novel survey methodology was developed for the collection of rich, longitudinal travel, time use, and expenditure data, leveraging the opportunities offered by both passive GPS tracking technology and time use diaries. Based on these data, patterns and preferences related to paid work, leisure, and other activities that comprise our everyday life were evaluated. Activities performed inside and outside of ...

    Energy & Environmental Science
Controlling solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in batteries is crucial for their efficient cycling. Herein, we demonstrate an approach to enable robust battery performance that does not rely on high fractions of fluorinated species in electrolytes, thus substantially decreasing the environmental footprint and cost of high-energy batteries. In this approach, we use very low fractions of readily reducible fluorinated cations in electrolyte ...

  4. The Executioner Paradox: understanding self-referential dilemma in computational systems

    Mahajan, Sachit (2024)
    AI & Society
As computational systems burgeon with advancing artificial intelligence (AI), the deterministic frameworks underlying them face novel challenges, especially when interfacing with self-modifying code. The Executioner Paradox, introduced herein, exemplifies such a challenge where a deterministic Executioner Machine (EM) grapples with self-aware and self-modifying code. This unveils a self-referential dilemma, highlighting a gap in current ...

  5. Alligator gar as a centenarian species: extending lifespan estimates using bomb radiocarbon and laser ablation-accelerator mass spectrometry

Andrews, Allen H.; Daugherty, Daniel J.; Wertnik, Melina; et al. (2024)
    Marine and Freshwater Research
Context The potential lifespan of alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula) is currently unknown. A previous study applied bomb radiocarbon (C-14) dating to establish ages >60 years, but maximum age was limited by the rise of bomb-produced C-14 in the 1950s. Aims An exceptionally large specimen (2.6 m, 148 kg) was captured in Mississippi and otolith growth zones revealed an age estimate of 95 years. This specimen provided an opportunity to ...
