Physics based models for characterization of machining performance – A critical review
(2024)CIRP Journal of Manufacturing Science and TechnologyThis paper presents a comprehensive review of the concept of machinability by considering the dynamic, tribological, and thermo-mechanical interactions encountered at the tool-chip-machined surface interfaces. The paper provides a demonstration of the capabilities and gaps of the physics-based models for the characterization of the machining performance and the prediction of machinability of difficult-to-cut materials, including additively ...Journal Article -
Elucidating the Role of O₂ Uncoupling for the Adaptation of Bacterial Biodegradation Reactions Catalyzed by Rieske Oxygenases
(2024)ACS Environmental AuOxygenation of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons by Rieske oxygenases is the initial step of various biodegradation pathways for environmental organic contaminants. Microorganisms carrying Rieske oxygenases are able to quickly adapt their substrate spectra to alternative carbon and energy sources that are structurally related to the original target substrate, yet the molecular events responsible for this rapid adaptation are not well ...Journal Article -
A meshless computational framework for studying cold spray additive manufacturing including large numbers of powder particles with diverse characteristics
(2024)Scientific ReportsCold spray (CS) has emerged as an appealing additive manufacturing (AM) technique for producing or repairing individual components or entire structures. Compared to fusion-based AM technologies, cold spray additive manufacturing (CSAM) offers distinct advantages in the fabrication of components, while avoiding some melting/solidification-related issues such as phase transformation and oxidation. It involves intricate processes that pose ...Journal Article -
QMugs 1.1: Quantum mechanical properties of organic compounds commonly encountered in reactivity datasets
(2023)Chemical Data CollectionsHere, the Quantum Mechanical Properties of Drug-like Molecules (QMugs) dataset is expanded to facilitate its use as training data for surrogate machine learning models to predict quantum mechanical properties for tasks related to chemical reactivity. Small molecules from reaction databases as well as charged and boron-containing compounds from ChEMBL were added. Each of these compounds was passed through a pipeline of MMFF94s/UFF conformer ...Journal Article -

Neural Denoising for Deep-Z Monte Carlo Renderings
(2024)Computer Graphics ForumWe present a kernel-predicting neural denoising method for path-traced deep-Z images that facilitates their usage in animation and visual effects production. Deep-Z images provide enhanced flexibility during compositing as they contain color, opacity, and other rendered data at multiple depth-resolved bins within each pixel. However, they are subject to noise, and rendering until convergence is prohibitively expensive. The current state ...Journal Article -
Life Cycle Economic and Environmental Assessment of Producing Synthetic Jet Fuel Using CO₂/Biomass Feedstocks
(2024)Environmental Science & TechnologyThe aviation industry is responsible for over 2% of global CO2 emissions. Synthetic jet fuels generated from biogenic feedstocks could help reduce life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to petroleum-based fuels. This study assesses three processes for producing synthetic jet fuel via the synthesis of methanol using water and atmospheric CO2 or biomass. A life cycle assessment and cost analysis are conducted to determine GHG ...Journal Article -
Generation of Entropy Waves by Fully Premixed Flames in a Non-Adiabatic Combustor With Hydrogen Enrichment
(2023)Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and PowerThermoacoustic combustion instability is a major concern in gas turbine combustors with hydrogen-enriched fuels. Unsteady combustion not only generates acoustic waves but it may also result in fluctuations of burnt gas temperature, referred to as entropy waves. They are convected by the mean flow through the combustor and can cause indirect combustion noise when they are accelerated at the exit. In this work, we demonstrate that entropy ...Journal Article -
Public Opinion Research in Ukraine Under Wartime Conditions
(2024)Ukrainian Analytical DigestThe topic of this issue is Public Opinion Research in Ukraine Under Wartime Conditions. Heiko Pleines and Eduard Klein as well as Inna Volosevych describe the situation of survey institutes in Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion. Volodymyr Paniotto and Serhiy Dembitsky discuss challenges regarding the collection of survey data and provide solutions for obtaining valid data. Serhiy Shapovalov uses survey data to show how Ukraine's ...Journal Issue -
Optimal lower bound on eigenvector overlaps for non-Hermitian random matrices
(2024)Journal of Functional AnalysisWe consider large non-Hermitian N x N matrices with an additive independent, identically distributed (i.i.d.) noise for each matrix elements. We show that already a small noise of variance 1/N completely thermalises the bulk singular vectors, in particular they satisfy the strong form of Quantum Unique Ergodicity (QUE) with an optimal speed of convergence. In physics terms, we thus extend the Eigenstate Thermalisation Hypothesis, formulated ...Journal Article
