Complex functionality with minimal computation: Promise and pitfalls of reduced‐tracer ocean biogeochemistry models
(2015)Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth SystemsEarth System Models increasingly include ocean biogeochemistry models in order to predict changes in ocean carbon storage, hypoxia, and biological productivity under climate change. However, state‐of‐the‐art ocean biogeochemical models include many advected tracers, that significantly increase the computational resources required, forcing a trade‐off with spatial resolution. Here, we compare a state‐of‐the art model with 30 prognostic ...Journal Article -
Physical Properties of stoichiometric GdN single crystals
(2012)Results in PhysicsThe preparation and definition of stoichiometric large (3–5 mm edge length) single crystals of GdN are described. The Hall effect and the electrical conductivity were found to be metallic. The optical reflectivity between 30 meV and 13 eV has been measured and the dielectric functions have been obtained. A plasma edge in the infrared region confirmed the metallic character. A shift of this plasma edge with temperature through the magnetic ...Journal Article -
Global localization of 3D anatomical structures by pre-filtered Hough Forests and discrete optimization
(2013)Medical Image AnalysisThe accurate localization of anatomical landmarks is a challenging task, often solved by domain specific approaches. We propose a method for the automatic localization of landmarks in complex, repetitive anatomical structures. The key idea is to combine three steps: (1) a classifier for pre-filtering anatomical landmark positions that (2) are refined through a Hough regression model, together with (3) a parts-based model of the global ...Journal Article -
Unique mutational profile associated with a loss of TDG expression in the rectal cancer of a patient with a constitutional PMS2 deficiency
(2012)DNA RepairCells with DNA repair defects have increased genomic instability and are more likely to acquire secondary mutations that bring about cellular transformation. We describe the frequency and spectrum of somatic mutations involving several tumor suppressor genes in the rectal carcinoma of a 13-year-old girl harboring biallelic, germline mutations in the DNA mismatch repair gene PMS2. Apart from microsatellite instability, the tumor DNA contained ...Journal Article -
Early Holocene (8.6 ka) rock avalanche deposits, Obernberg valley (Eastern Alps): Landform interpretation and kinematics of rapid mass movement
(2012)GeomorphologyIn the Obernberg valley, the Eastern Alps, landforms recently interpreted as moraines are re-interpreted as rock avalanche deposits. The catastrophic slope failure involved an initial rock volume of about 45 million m³, with a runout of 7.2 km over a total vertical distance of 1330 m (fahrböschung 10°). 36Cl surface-exposure dating of boulders of the avalanche mass indicates an event age of 8.6 ± 0.6 ka. A 14C age of 7785 ± 190 cal yr BP ...Journal Article -
Characterization of the Fe-rich corner of Al–Fe–Si–Ti
(2013)IntermetallicsThe quaternary system Al–Fe–Si–Ti was studied in the iron-rich corner for sections at 50, 60 and 70 at.% Fe at 900 °C. Isothermal phase equilibria were investigated by a combination of optical microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) followed by Rietveld refinement and Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA). Phase boundaries of the phases, in particular of the Laves phase (Fe2Ti) and of the extended phase field of A2/B2/D03, were investigated. ...Journal Article -
Soil metaproteomics – Comparative evaluation of protein extraction protocols
(2012)Soil Biology and BiochemistryMetaproteomics and its potential applications are very promising to study microbial activity in environmental samples and to obtain a deeper understanding of microbial interactions. However, due to the complexity of soil samples the exhaustive extraction of proteins is a major challenge. We compared soil protein extraction protocols in terms of their protein extraction efficiency for two different soil types. Four different protein ...Journal Article -
The Protein Interaction Landscape of the Human CMGC Kinase Group
(2013)Cell ReportsCellular information processing via reversible protein phosphorylation requires tight control of the localization, activity, and substrate specificity of protein kinases, which to a large extent is accomplished by complex formation with other proteins. Despite their critical role in cellular regulation and pathogenesis, protein interaction information is available for only a subset of the 518 human protein kinases. Here we present a global ...Journal Article -
Sequential Bayesian Inference for Uncertain Nonlinear Dynamic Systems: A Tutorial
(2022)Journal of Structural DynamicsIn this article, an overview of Bayesian methods for sequential simulation from posterior distributions of nonlinear and non-Gaussian dynamic systems is presented. The focus is mainly laid on sequential Monte Carlo methods, which are based on particle representations of probability densities and can be seamlessly generalized to any state-space representation. Within this context, a unified framework of the various Particle Filter (PF) ...Journal Article -
“Brick-topia”, the thin-tile vaulted pavilion
(2014)Case Studies in Structural EngineeringThe project “Brick-topia” was based on a combination of the latest structural analysis and form-finding computational tools with traditional, cheap and effective construction techniques. It is the result of innovation to fight against budget and time. The initial budget was 3000 euros and only seven weeks was the time to look for sponsors, design the pavilion, plan the construction phases and build it. The whole process of designing, ...Journal Article
