DebtRank: Too Central to Fail?
(2012)Scientific ReportsSystemic risk, here meant as the risk of default of a large portion of the financial system, depends on the network of financial exposures among institutions. However, there is no widely accepted methodology to determine the systemically important nodes in a network. To fill this gap, we introduce, DebtRank, a novel measure of systemic impact inspired by feedback-centrality. As an application, we analyse a new and unique dataset on the ...Journal Article -
An Innovative Use of Renewable Ground Heat for Insulation in Low Exergy Building Systems
(2012)EnergiesGround heat is a renewable resource that is readily available for buildings in cool climates, but its relatively low temperature requires the use of a heat pump to extract it for heating. We developed a system that uses low temperature ground heat directly in a building wall to reduce transmission heat losses. The Active Low Exergy Geothermal Insulation Systems (ALEGIS) minimizes exergy demand and maximizes the use of renewable geothermal ...Journal Article -
A k-shell decomposition method for weighted networks
(2012)New Journal of PhysicsWe present a generalized method for calculating the k-shell structure of weighted networks. The method takes into account both the weight and the degree of a network, in such a way that in the absence of weights we resume the shell structure obtained by the classic k-shell decomposition. In the presence of weights, we show that the method is able to partition the network in a more refined way, without the need of any arbitrary threshold ...Journal Article -
1.55 µm InAs/GaAs Quantum Dots and High Repetition Rate Quantum Dot SESAM Mode-locked Laser
(2012)Scientific ReportsHigh pulse repetition rate (≥10 GHz) diode-pumped solid-state lasers, modelocked using semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) are emerging as an enabling technology for high data rate coherent communication systems owing to their low noise and pulse-to-pulse optical phase-coherence. Quantum dot (QD) based SESAMs offer potential advantages to such laser systems in terms of reduced saturation fluence, broader bandwidth, and ...Journal Article -
Nanoscale Dynamics of Phase Flipping in Water near its Hypothesized Liquid-Liquid Critical Point
(2012)Scientific ReportsOne hypothesized explanation for water's anomalies imagines the existence of a liquid-liquid (LL) phase transition line separating two liquid phases and terminating at a LL critical point. We simulate the classic ST2 model of water for times up to 1000 ns and system size up to N = 729. We find that for state points near the LL transition line, the entire system flips rapidly between liquid states of high and low density. Our finite-size ...Journal Article -
Emotional persistence in online chatting communities
(2012)Scientific ReportsHow do users behave in online chatrooms, where they instantaneously read and write posts? We analyzed about 2.5 million posts covering various topics in Internet relay channels, and found that user activity patterns follow known power-law and stretched exponential distributions, indicating that online chat activity is not different from other forms of communication. Analysing the emotional expressions (positive, negative, neutral) of ...Journal Article -
Quantifying the Advantage of Looking Forward
(2012)Scientific ReportsWe introduce a future orientation index to quantify the degree to which Internet users worldwide seek more information about years in the future than years in the past. We analyse Google logs and find a striking correlation between the country's GDP and the predisposition of its inhabitants to look forward.Journal Article -
Fracturing ranked surfaces
(2012)Scientific ReportsDiscretized landscapes can be mapped onto ranked surfaces, where every element (site or bond) has a unique rank associated with its corresponding relative height. By sequentially allocating these elements according to their ranks and systematically preventing the occupation of bridges, namely elements that, if occupied, would provide global connectivity, we disclose that bridges hide a new tricritical point at an occupation fraction p = ...Journal Article -
Detection of hidden structures for arbitrary scales in complex physical systems
(2012)Scientific ReportsRecent decades have experienced the discovery of numerous complex materials. At the root of the complexity underlying many of these materials lies a large number of contending atomic- and largerscale configurations. In order to obtain a more detailed understanding of such systems, we need tools that enable the detection of pertinent structures on all spatial and temporal scales. Towards this end, we suggest a new method that applies to ...Journal Article -
Cancer cell proliferation is inhibited by specific modulation frequencies
(2012)British Journal of CancerBackground: There is clinical evidence that very low and safe levels of amplitude-modulated electromagnetic fields administered via an intrabuccal spoon-shaped probe may elicit therapeutic responses in patients with cancer. However, there is no known mechanism explaining the anti-proliferative effect of very low intensity electromagnetic fields. Methods: To understand the mechanism of this novel approach, hepatocellular carcinoma ...Journal Article
