Competition and R&D cooperation with universities and competitors
(2011)KOF Working PapersThis paper analyzes the relationship between competition and R&D cooperation with universities and competitors. Our simple model predicts that more competitors reduce the incentives for horizontal cooperation as it diminishes the gains from “collusion”. Assuming that the value of synergies and spillovers created by cooperation depends on competition intensity reveals two distinct and opposing incentives for cooperation. While synergies ...Working Paper -
Innovation and Firm Growth over the Business Cycle
(2016)KOF Working PapersThis paper investigates how the macroeconomic business cycle impacts the empirical relation between firms’ innovations and their sales growth rates. Based on firm-level panel data over the time period 1995-2014, the paper finds no visible sales growth differentials between firms in booming economic environments. In the economically difficult times of recessions, by contrast, innovative firms show significantly higher sales growth rates ...Working Paper -
The Performance Effect of Environmental Innovations
(2013)KOF Working PapersWhile recent literature has focused on explaining the determinants of green innovations, it is not well understood how such innovations affect performance. To analyse the relationship between green innovation and performance, new industry-level panel data were exploited: these include 12 OECD countries, the whole manufacturing sector and a period of 30 years. The results show that green inventions are U-shape related to performance. ...Working Paper -

Throughout ...Report -
Determinants of Green Innovation
(2012)KOF Working PapersBased on a comprehensive data set comprising 13 countries, 22 industries and a period of 30 years we investigate the impact of internal and external knowledge pools of both green and ‘other than green’ technologies on green patent activities. It turned out that the internal green knowledge stock is positively related to green patent activities with a considerably large marginal value. The country’s green knowledge stock and the green ...Working Paper -
Research and Development as an Initiator of Fixed Capital Investment
(2016)KOF Working PapersThis paper investigates the causal relationship between firms? research and development expenditures (R&D) and their investments into fixed capital. The literature provides two contrasting views in this respect. The first view holds that a firm?s research activity causes, via the creation of inventions, subsequent investment into fixed capital, as the firm needs additional capacities to produce the new goods or services that follow from ...Working Paper -
Diversity Structure of the Schumpeterian Evolution. An Axiomatic Approach
(2006)KOF Working PapersThe purpose of the paper is to impose the diversity structure on the Schumpeterian evolution modelled axiomatically within a dynamical system approach to the ArrowDebreu theory of general equilibrium. In this framework two basic forms of economic life studied by Schumpeter, i.e., the circular flow and economic development are investigated as specific properties of a dynamic system, where single production systems being the parts of the ...Working Paper -
