When is a bus full?
(2013)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungCrowding on buses, trams and trains leads to a deteriorated performance of the public transport system through increased waiting times and vehicle bunching, and is naturally resented by its customers. In the past, i.e. in the absence of smart card ticketing system, crowding was difficult to measure in any detail and therefore to trace its impact on user behaviour, e.g. trip making, route and departure time choice by user characteristics. ...Working Paper -

Tracing the Sars-CoV-2 impact
(2020)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungThis note describes the changes in travel behaviour due to the restrictions imposed to slow the spread of the Sars-CoV-2 epidemic in Switzerland. The existing analyses of the Google or the national Intervisa data have limits due to missing socio-demographic details about their users. We briefly describe our GPS tracking panel and its sample. The analyses focus on the changes for different income groups and for the differences in accessibility. ...Working Paper -
Exploring choice set generation approaches for public transport connection choice
(2014)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungThis technical working paper documents the choice set generation algorithms for public transport connection choice in their state of development in August 2014. The choice set generation methods have been developed to generate the non-chosen alternatives for public transport trips that have been observed through GPS traces recorded either by dedicated GPS devices or by smart-phones. The choice set generation approaches that we have developed ...Working Paper -
Understanding the variations of micro-mobility behavior before and during COVID-19 pandemic period
(2020)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungInfluenced by the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), many cities in the world adopted the lockdown policy. It has influenced many aspects of human life, such as the economy, tourism, and transportation. Shared micro-mobility services, a new transport mode, are also influenced by COVID-19. In this study, we explore and understand the variations of micro-mobility behavior before and during COVID-19 pandemic by conducting a ...Working Paper -
Predicting response rates updated
(2015)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungThis note updates the first detailed analysis of response burden and response rates reported in Axhausen and Weis (2010). It also updates the rating of stated choice experiments. The analysis of the richer data set shows that the drop in response rate is proportional to the length and complexity of the questionnaire and gives first formulae to predict the response rates.Report -
Agent-based simulation of city-wide autonomous ride-pooling and the impact on traffic noise
(2020)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungPooled on-demand services promise to provide a convenient mobility experience and increase efficiency of road transport. We apply an established ride-pooling algorithm within the simulation framework MATSim to an autonomous fleet serving almost 2 million requests in Munich. Two mode choice scenarios are implemented, one substituting all car trips by ride-pooling, another one with free mode choice. For both scenarios we compare a stop-based ...Working Paper -
Efficiency of choice set generation methods for bicycle routes
(2012)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungThe current study analyses the efficiency of choice set generation methods for bicycle routes and proposes the extension of cost functions to bicycle-oriented factors not limited to distance and time. Three choice set generation methods for route choice were examined in their ability to generate relevant and heterogeneous routes: doubly stochastic generation function, breadth first search on link elimination, and branch & bound algorithm. ...Working Paper -

Road accessibility of Germany and Switzerland 1970-2007
(2013)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungThis study adopts the basic potential approach of accessibility and investigates it at the municipal level of resolution over a long time period for Germany and Switzerland. The availability of his-torical data shaped the scope, geographical bounds and historical timeline of this study. Generat-ing a historically and regionally comparable data set turned out to be a challenge. The accessibil-ity combines the quality of the transport network ...Working Paper
