Noninvasive electron microscopy with interaction-free quantum measurements
(2009)Physical Review AWe propose the use of interaction-free quantum measurements with electrons to eliminate sample damage in electron microscopy. This might allow noninvasive molecular-resolution imaging. We show the possibility of such measurements in the presence of experimentally measured quantum decoherence rates and using a scheme based on existing charged particle trapping techniques.Journal Article -
Design of Distributed Decentralized Estimators for Formations with Fixed and Stochastic Communication Topologies
(2009)AutomaticaThis paper proposes a solution to the problem of synthesizing distributed decentralized estimators for a formation of agents. The collected dynamics of the formation are modeled by a discrete LTI system. In the considered estimation structure each agent of the formation carries an estimate of the entire formation state. Agents of the formation can communicate information between each other through unidirectional links modeled with a ...Journal Article -
Correlations between polarisation states of W particles in the reaction e-e+→W-W+ at LEP2 energies 189-209 GeV
(2009)The European Physical Journal CIn a study of the reaction e − e +→W − W + with the DELPHI detector, the probabilities of the two W particles occurring in the joint polarisation states transverse–transverse (TT), longitudinal–transverse plus transverse–longitudinal (LT) and longitudinal–longitudinal (LL) have been determined using the final states WW→lνqq¯ (l=e,μ). The two-particle joint polarisation probabilities, i.e. the spin density matrix elements ρ TT , ρ LT , ρ ...Journal Article -
Inclusive single-particle production in two-photon collisions at LEP II with the DELPHI detector
(2009)Physics Letters BA study of the inclusive charged hadron production in two-photon collisions is described. The data were collected with the DELPHI detector at LEP II. Results on the inclusive single-particle pT distribution and the differential charged hadrons d σ / d pT cross-section are presented and compared to the predictions of perturbative NLO QCD calculations and to published results.Journal Article -
NOx production by lightning in Hector: first airborne measurements during SCOUT-O3/ACTIVE
(2009)Atmospheric Chemistry and PhysicsDuring the SCOUT-O3/ACTIVE field phase in November–December 2005, airborne in situ measurements were performed inside and in the vicinity of thunderstorms over northern Australia with several research aircraft (German Falcon, Russian M55 Geophysica, and British Dornier-228. Here a case study from 19 November is presented in detail on the basis of airborne trace gas measurements (NO, NOy, CO, O3) and stroke measurements from the German ...Journal Article -
Recombination in Glomus intraradices, a supposed ancient asexual arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus
(2009)BMC Evolutionary BiologyBackground Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are important symbionts of most plant species, promoting plant diversity and productivity. This symbiosis is thought to have contributed to the early colonisation of land by plants. Morphological stasis over 400 million years and the lack of an observed sexual stage in any member of the phylum Glomeromycota led to the controversial suggestion of AMF being ancients asexuals. Evidence for ...Journal Article -
Development and mapping of DArT markers within the Festuca-Lolium complex
(2009)BMC GenomicsBackground Grasses are among the most important and widely cultivated plants on Earth. They provide high quality fodder for livestock, are used for turf and amenity purposes, and play a fundamental role in environment protection. Among cultivated grasses, species within the Festuca-Lolium complex predominate, especially in temperate regions. To facilitate high-throughput genome profiling and genetic mapping within the complex, we have ...Journal Article -
Characterisation of atypical enteropathogenic E. coli strains of clinical origin
(2009)BMC MicrobiologyBackground Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) is a prominent cause of diarrhoea, and is characterised in part by its carriage of a pathogenicity island: the locus for enterocyte effacement (LEE). EPEC is divided into two subtypes according to the presence of bundle-forming pili (BFP), a fimbrial adhesin that is a virulence determinant of typical EPEC (tEPEC), but is absent from atypical EPEC (aEPEC). Because aEPEC lack BFP, their virulence ...Journal Article -
Genetic Variation in Healthy Oldest-Old
(2009)PLoS ONEIndividuals who live to 85 and beyond without developing major age-related diseases may achieve this, in part, by lacking disease susceptibility factors, or by possessing resistance factors that enhance their ability to avoid disease and prolong lifespan. Healthy aging is a complex phenotype likely to be affected by both genetic and environmental factors. We sequenced 24 candidate healthy aging genes in DNA samples from 47 healthy individuals ...Journal Article -
Evolution of Phosphoregulation: Comparison of Phosphorylation Patterns across Yeast Species
(2009)PLoS BiologyThe extent by which different cellular components generate phenotypic diversity is an ongoing debate in evolutionary biology that is yet to be addressed by quantitative comparative studies. We conducted an in vivo mass-spectrometry study of the phosphoproteomes of three yeast species (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida albicans, and Schizosaccharomyces pombe) in order to quantify the evolutionary rate of change of phosphorylation. We ...Journal Article
