Exploiting the weekly cycle as observed over Europe to analyse aerosol indirect effects in two climate models
(2009)Atmospheric Chemistry and PhysicsA weekly cycle in aerosol pollution and some meteorological quantities is observed over Europe. In the present study we exploit this effect to analyse aerosol-cloud-radiation interactions. A weekly cycle is imposed on anthropogenic emissions in two general circulation models that include parameterizations of aerosol processes and cloud microphysics. It is found that the simulated weekly cycles in sulfur dioxide, sulfate, and aerosol optical ...Journal Article -
Noninvasive electron microscopy with interaction-free quantum measurements
(2009)Physical Review AWe propose the use of interaction-free quantum measurements with electrons to eliminate sample damage in electron microscopy. This might allow noninvasive molecular-resolution imaging. We show the possibility of such measurements in the presence of experimentally measured quantum decoherence rates and using a scheme based on existing charged particle trapping techniques.Journal Article -
Minority Voting and Public Project Provision
(2009)Economics: The Open-Access, Open-Assessment JournalThe author proposes a two-round process called minority voting to allocate public projects in a polity. In the first round, a society decides by a simple majority decision whether to provide the public project. If the proposal in the first round is rejected, the process ends. Otherwise the process continues, but only the members of the minority keep agenda and voting rights for the second round, in which the financing scheme is determined. ...Journal Article -
Now or Never: Environmental Protection under Hyperbolic Discounting
(2009)Economics: The Open-Access, Open-Assessment JournalThe author analyzes the optimal investment in environmental protection in a model of non-overlapping hyperbolically discounting agents. He shows that, in the long run and in the absence of a commitment device, society is stuck in a situation where all agents prefer further investments, yet no agent invests. This holds no matter whether agents are aware of the time inconsistency of their preferences. As a consequence, awareness of the ...Journal Article -
Modelling of cirrus clouds - Part 1a: Model description and validation
(2009)Atmospheric Chemistry and PhysicsA double-moment bulk microphysics scheme for modelling cirrus clouds including explicit impact of aerosols on different types of nucleation mechanism is described. Process rates are formulated in terms of generalised moments of the underlying a priori size distributions in order to allow simple switching between various distribution types. The scheme has been implemented into a simple box model and into the anelastic non-hydrostatic model ...Journal Article -
Statistical analysis of anthropogenic non-methane VOC variability at a European background location (Jungfraujoch, Switzerland)
(2009)Atmospheric Chemistry and PhysicsIn-situ measurements of 7 volatile hydrocarbons, CxHy, and 3 chlorinated organic compounds, CxHyClz, were performed at Jungfraujoch (Switzerland) during eight years (2000–2007). The analysis of 4-h resolved non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) was achieved by using gas-chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Variabilities in the NMVOC time series dataset were modeled by factor analysis (positive matrix factorization, ...Journal Article -
Design of Distributed Decentralized Estimators for Formations with Fixed and Stochastic Communication Topologies
(2009)AutomaticaThis paper proposes a solution to the problem of synthesizing distributed decentralized estimators for a formation of agents. The collected dynamics of the formation are modeled by a discrete LTI system. In the considered estimation structure each agent of the formation carries an estimate of the entire formation state. Agents of the formation can communicate information between each other through unidirectional links modeled with a ...Journal Article -

Squaraine Planar-Heterojunction Solar Cells
(2009)International Journal of PhotoenergyThe photovoltaic performance of squaraine-based organic solar cells is investigated. Two squaraine derivatives with extraordinarily high extinction coefficients are used as electron donors in bilayer heterojunctions with fullerene as electron acceptor. Due to the very strong squaraine absorption band in the red spectral domain, antibatic behavior due to light filtering is observed in the photocurrent spectrum for film thicknesses of 35 nm ...Journal Article
