The hydraulics of final settling tanks
(1991)Water Science & TechnologyAn analysis of the flow field in final settling tanks is presented. Computer simulations and hydraulic model tests have succeeded in demonstrating the forward flow near the bottom and the resulting backward flow at the surface, as well as in finding their cause. A reduction of the total energy input and consequently a more uniform velocity distribution were achieved by an inflow which is situated relatively low in the tank. By means of ...Journal Article -
Backwater curves in circular channels
(1991)Journal of Irrigation and Drainage EngineeringBackwater curves in circular sewers and drainage conduits are considered by an explicit approach. The new method is based on simple expressions for uniform and critical flows, and a transformation of the longitudinal coordinate by which the effect of relative uniform flow depth may be incorporated. As a result, the method presented allows the explicit determination of any backwater effect. This is of engineering concern, particularly in ...Journal Article -
Borehole temperatures at the Colle Gnifetti core-drilling site (Monte Rosa, Swiss Alps)
(1991)Journal of GlaciologyMeasured englacial temperatures at the Colle Gnifetti core-drilling site are presented and compared with model calculations concerning possible effects of 20th century warming. The firn/ice saddle at the 124 m deep saddle borehole is cold throughout with a mean annual surface temperature near –14°C and a basal temperature slightly below –12°C. Influence of refreezing meltwater is weak and limited to near-surface formation of ice layers ...Journal Article -
Laboratory experiments on the dynamics of powder snow avalanches in the run out zone
(1991)Journal of GlaciologyWe report on laboratory experiments on the motion of powder-snow avalanches along a bent chute. The avalanches are simulated as turbulent boundary-layer flows of polystyrene particles in still water along a chute consisting of a straight inclined part, a curved part and a second, possibly inclined, run-out zone. An ultrasonic measuring technique is used to determine mean particle speeds (via the Doppler shift of the reflected signal) and ...Journal Article -
Uniform aerated chute flow
(1991)Journal of Hydraulic EngineeringUniform flow with natural air entrainment on spillway chutes is considered. Based on the experimental data of Straub and Anderson, the air-concentration profiles are first investigated. A similarity plot is presented, which unifies the data pertaining to various chute slopes. First, an expression for the average air concentration is deduced. The latter increases almost linearly with the chute slope. Second, the ratio between the air-water ...Journal Article -

Journal Article -
