Logarithmic Components of the Vacant Set for Random Walk on a Discrete Torus
(2008)Electronic Journal of ProbabilityThis work continues the investigation, initiated in a recent work by Benjamini and Sznitman, of percolative properties of the set of points not visited by a random walk on the discrete torus (Z/NZ)d up to time uNd in high dimension d. If u>0 is chosen sufficiently small it has been shown that with overwhelming probability this vacant set contains a unique giant component containing segments of length c0logN for some constant c0>0, and ...Journal Article -
Exploiting the weekly cycle as observed over Europe to analyse aerosol indirect effects in two climate models
(2009)Atmospheric Chemistry and PhysicsA weekly cycle in aerosol pollution and some meteorological quantities is observed over Europe. In the present study we exploit this effect to analyse aerosol-cloud-radiation interactions. A weekly cycle is imposed on anthropogenic emissions in two general circulation models that include parameterizations of aerosol processes and cloud microphysics. It is found that the simulated weekly cycles in sulfur dioxide, sulfate, and aerosol optical ...Journal Article -
Noninvasive electron microscopy with interaction-free quantum measurements
(2009)Physical Review AWe propose the use of interaction-free quantum measurements with electrons to eliminate sample damage in electron microscopy. This might allow noninvasive molecular-resolution imaging. We show the possibility of such measurements in the presence of experimentally measured quantum decoherence rates and using a scheme based on existing charged particle trapping techniques.Journal Article -
Regulation of Schwann cell proliferation and apoptosis in PMP22-deficient mice and mouse models of Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease type 1A
(2001)Brain: A Journal of NeurologyCharcot–Marie–Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) is caused by an increased dosage of the peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP22) gene or by point mutations affecting the same gene. Based on in vitro data, PMP22 might be involved, besides in its proven role in the regulation of myelination and myelin maintenance, in the control of Schwann cell proliferation and programmed cell death. In this report, we have used mice lacking PMP22 and mouse models ...Journal Article -
Correlations between total cell concentration, total adenosine tri-phosphate concentration and heterotrophic plate counts during microbial monitoring of drinking water
(2008)Drinking Water Engineering and ScienceThe general microbial quality of drinking water is normally monitored by heterotrophic plate counts (HPC). This method has been used for more than 100 years and is recommended in drinking water guidelines. However, the HPC method is handicapped because it is time-consuming and restricted to culturable bacteria. Recently, rapid and accurate detection methods have emerged, such as adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP) measurements to assess microbial ...Journal Article -
Modelling of cirrus clouds - Part 1a: Model description and validation
(2009)Atmospheric Chemistry and PhysicsA double-moment bulk microphysics scheme for modelling cirrus clouds including explicit impact of aerosols on different types of nucleation mechanism is described. Process rates are formulated in terms of generalised moments of the underlying a priori size distributions in order to allow simple switching between various distribution types. The scheme has been implemented into a simple box model and into the anelastic non-hydrostatic model ...Journal Article -
Statistical analysis of anthropogenic non-methane VOC variability at a European background location (Jungfraujoch, Switzerland)
(2009)Atmospheric Chemistry and PhysicsIn-situ measurements of 7 volatile hydrocarbons, CxHy, and 3 chlorinated organic compounds, CxHyClz, were performed at Jungfraujoch (Switzerland) during eight years (2000–2007). The analysis of 4-h resolved non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) was achieved by using gas-chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Variabilities in the NMVOC time series dataset were modeled by factor analysis (positive matrix factorization, ...Journal Article -
Search for colour reconnection effects in e+e- -> W+W- -> hadrons through particle-flow studies at LEP
(2003)Physics Letters BA search for colour reconnection effects in hadronic decays of W pairs is performed with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209 GeV. The analysis is based on the study of the particle flow between jets associated to the sameW boson and between two different W bosons in qqqq events. The ratio of particle yields in the different interjet regions is found to be sensitive to colour reconnection effects implemented in ...Journal Article -
Squaraine Planar-Heterojunction Solar Cells
(2009)International Journal of PhotoenergyThe photovoltaic performance of squaraine-based organic solar cells is investigated. Two squaraine derivatives with extraordinarily high extinction coefficients are used as electron donors in bilayer heterojunctions with fullerene as electron acceptor. Due to the very strong squaraine absorption band in the red spectral domain, antibatic behavior due to light filtering is observed in the photocurrent spectrum for film thicknesses of 35 nm ...Journal Article -
A general real-time formulation for multi-rate mass transfer problems
(2009)Hydrology and Earth System SciencesMany flow and transport phenomena, ranging from delayed storage in pumping tests to tailing in river or aquifer tracer breakthrough curves or slow kinetics in reactive transport, display non-equilibrium (NE) behavior. These phenomena are usually modeled by non-local in time formulations, such as multi-porosity, multiple processes non equilibrium, continuous time random walk, memory functions, integro-differential equations, fractional ...Journal Article
