A study of the radiation tolerance of poly-crystalline and single-crystalline CVD diamond to 800 MeV and 24 GeV protons
(2019)Journal of Physics D: Applied PhysicsWe have measured the radiation tolerance of poly-crystalline and single-crystalline diamonds grown by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process by measuring the charge collected before and after irradiation in a 50 μm pitch strip detector fabricated on each diamond sample. We irradiated one group of sensors with 800 MeV protons, and a second group of sensors with 24 GeV protons, in steps, to (1.34 ± 0.08 × 1016) protons cm-2 and (1.80 ...Journal Article -
The DAQ and control system for the CMS Phase-1 pixel detector upgrade
(2019)Journal of InstrumentationIn 2017 a new pixel detector was installed in the CMS detector. This so-called Phase-1pixel detector features four barrel layers in the central region and three disks per end in the forwardregions. The upgraded pixel detector requires an upgraded data acquisition (DAQ) system to accepta new data format and larger event sizes. A new DAQ and control system has been developedbased on a combination of custom and commercial microTCA parts. ...Journal Article -
Search for neutral-current induced single photon production at the ND280 near detector in T2K
(2019)Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle PhysicsNeutrino neutral-current induced single photon production is a sub-leading order process for accelerator-based neutrino beam experiments including T2K. It is, however, an important process to understand because it is a background for electron (anti)neutrino appearance oscillation experiments. Here, we performed the first search of this process below 1 GeV using the fine-grained detector at the T2K ND280 off-axis near detector. By ...Journal Article -
Performance of missing transverse momentum reconstruction in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV using the CMS detector
(2019)Journal of InstrumentationThe performance of missing transverse momentum (vec pTmiss) reconstruction algorithms for the CMS experiment is presented, using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected at the CERN LHC in 2016. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. The results include measurements of the scale and resolution of vec pTmiss, and detailed studies of events identified with anomalous vec pTmiss. ...Journal Article -
The experimental facility for the Search for Hidden Particles at the CERN SPS
(2019)Journal of InstrumentationThe Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has shown that the CERN SPS accelerator with its 400 GeV/c proton beam offers a unique opportunity to explore the Hidden Sector [1–3]. The proposed experiment is an intensity frontier experiment which is capable of searching for hidden particles through both visible decays and through scattering signatures from recoil of electrons or nuclei. The high-intensity experimental facility ...Journal Article -
A 4 tonne demonstrator for large-scale dual-phase liquid argon time projection chambers
(2018)Journal of InstrumentationA 10 kilo-tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC is one of the detector options considered for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The detector technology relies on amplification of the ionisation charge in ultra-pure argon vapour and offers several advantages compared to the traditional single-phase liquid argon TPCs. A 4.2 tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC prototype, the largest of its kind, with an active volume of \three has ...Journal Article -
Performance of reconstruction and identification of 𝜏 leptons decaying to hadrons and 𝜈𝜏 in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV
(2018)Journal of InstrumentationThe algorithm developed by the CMS Collaboration to reconstruct and identify τ leptons produced in proton-proton collisions at √s=7 and 8 TeV, via their decays to hadrons and a neutrino, has been significantly improved. The changes include a revised reconstruction of π0 candidates, and improvements in multivariate discriminants to separate τ leptons from jets and electrons. The algorithm is extended to reconstruct τ leptons in highly ...Journal Article -
The Blazar TXS 0506+056 Associated with a High-energy Neutrino: Insights into Extragalactic Jets and Cosmic-Ray Acceleration
(2018)The Astrophysical Journal LettersA neutrino with energy ~290 TeV, IceCube-170922A, was detected in coincidence with the BL Lac object TXS 0506+056 during enhanced gamma-ray activity, with chance coincidence being rejected at ~3σ level. We monitored the object in the very-high-energy (VHE) band with the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes for ~41 hr from 1.3 to 40.4 days after the neutrino detection. Day-timescale variability is clearly resolved. ...Journal Article -
Performance of the CMS muon detector and muon reconstruction with proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV
(2018)Journal of InstrumentationThe CMS muon detector system, muon reconstruction software, and high-level trigger underwent significant changes in 2013–2014 in preparation for running at higher LHC collision energy and instantaneous luminosity. The performance of the modified system is studied using proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energy √s=13 TeV, collected at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. The measured performance parameters, including spatial resolution, ...Journal Article -
Space QUEST mission proposal: experimentally testing decoherence due to gravity
(2018)New Journal of PhysicsModels of quantum systems on curved space-times lack sufficient experimental verification. Some speculative theories suggest that quantum correlations, such as entanglement, may exhibit different behavior to purely classical correlations in curved space. By measuring this effect or lack thereof, we can test the hypotheses behind several such models. For instance, as predicted by Ralph et al [5] and Ralph and Pienaar [1], a bipartite ...Journal Article
