Measurement of the Isolated Prompt Photon Production Cross Section in pp Collisions at √s=7 TeV
(2011)Physical Review LettersThe differential cross section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons has been measured as a function of the photon transverse energy EγT in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV using data recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 pb−1. Photons are required to have a pseudorapidity |ηγ|<1.45 and EγT>21 GeV, covering the kinematic region 0.006<xT<0.086. The measured ...Journal Article -
Ecological Implications of a Flower Size/Number Trade-Off in Tropical Forest Trees
(2011)PLoS ONEBackground In angiosperms, flower size commonly scales negatively with number. The ecological consequences of this trade-off for tropical trees remain poorly resolved, despite their potential importance for tropical forest conservation. We investigated the flower size number trade-off and its implications for fecundity in a sample of tree species from the Dipterocarpaceae on Borneo. Methodology/Principal Findings We combined experimental ...Journal Article -
Taking sides with pain – lateralization aspects related to cerebral processing of dental pain
(2011)Frontiers in Human NeuroscienceThe current fMRI study investigated cortical processing of electrically induced painful tooth stimulation of both maxillary canines and central incisors in 21 healthy, right-handed volunteers. A constant current, 150% above tooth specific pain perception thresholds was applied and corresponding online ratings of perceived pain intensity were recorded with a computerized visual analog scale during fMRI measurements. Lateralization of ...Journal Article -
Effect of Population Heterogenization on the Reproducibility of Mouse Behavior: A Multi-Laboratory Study
(2011)PLoS ONEIn animal experiments, animals, husbandry and test procedures are traditionally standardized to maximize test sensitivity and minimize animal use, assuming that this will also guarantee reproducibility. However, by reducing within-experiment variation, standardization may limit inference to the specific experimental conditions. Indeed, we have recently shown in mice that standardization may generate spurious results in behavioral tests, ...Journal Article -
Noise-Induced Modulation of the Relaxation Kinetics around a Non-Equilibrium Steady State of Non-Linear Chemical Reaction Networks
(2011)PLoS ONEStochastic effects from correlated noise non-trivially modulate the kinetics of non-linear chemical reaction networks. This is especially important in systems where reactions are confined to small volumes and reactants are delivered in bursts. We characterise how the two noise sources confinement and burst modulate the relaxation kinetics of a non-linear reaction network around a non-equilibrium steady state. We find that the lifetimes ...Journal Article -
Seasonal and Long-Term Changes in Relative Abundance of Bull Sharks from a Tourist Shark Feeding Site in Fiji
(2011)PLoS ONEShark tourism has become increasingly popular, but remains controversial because of major concerns originating from the need of tour operators to use bait or chum to reliably attract sharks. We used direct underwater sampling to document changes in bull shark Carcharhinus leucas relative abundance at the Shark Reef Marine Reserve, a shark feeding site in Fiji, and the reproductive cycle of the species in Fijian waters. Between 2003 and ...Journal Article -
Mechanism of Inhibition of Enveloped Virus Membrane Fusion by the Antiviral Drug Arbidol
(2011)PLoS ONEThe broad-spectrum antiviral arbidol (Arb) inhibits cell entry of enveloped viruses by blocking viral fusion with host cell membrane. To better understand Arb mechanism of action, we investigated its interactions with phospholipids and membrane peptides. We demonstrate that Arb associates with phospholipids in the micromolar range. NMR reveals that Arb interacts with the polar head-group of phospholipid at the membrane interface. Fluorescence ...Journal Article -
Electrochemical Disinfection of Dental Implants - a Proof of Concept
(2011)PLoS ONEBackground Peri-implantitis has gained significant clinical attention in recent years. This disease is an inflammatory reaction to microorganisms around dental implants. Due to the limited accessibility, non-invasive antimicrobial strategies are of high interest. An unexpected approach to implant disinfection may evolve from electrolysis. Given the electrical conductivity of titanium implants, alkalinity or active oxidants can be generated ...Journal Article -
Aerosols Transmit Prions to Immunocompetent and Immunodeficient Mice
(2011)PLoS PathogensPrions, the agents causing transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, colonize the brain of hosts after oral, parenteral, intralingual, or even transdermal uptake. However, prions are not generally considered to be airborne. Here we report that inbred and crossbred wild-type mice, as well as tga20 transgenic mice overexpressing PrPC, efficiently develop scrapie upon exposure to aerosolized prions. NSE-PrP transgenic mice, which express ...Journal Article -
HESS Opinions: Hydrologic predictions in a changing environment: behavioral modeling
(2011)Hydrology and Earth System SciencesMost hydrological models are valid at most only in a few places and cannot be reasonably transferred to other places or to far distant time periods. Transfer in space is difficult because the models are conditioned on past observations at particular places to define parameter values and unobservable processes that are needed to fully characterize the structure and functioning of the landscape. Transfer in time has to deal with the likely ...Journal Article
