Mathematical Variables as Indigenous Concepts
(2009)International Studies in the Philosophy of ScienceThis text explores the semiotic status of algebraic terms. To do that we import a structural and post-structural train of thought going from Mauss and Lévi-Strauss to Baudrillard and Derrida. We import these authors' semiotic thinking from the register of indigenous concepts (such as mana), and apply it to the register of algebra via a concrete case study of generating functions. The purpose of this experiment is to provide a philosophical ...Journal Article -
Noninvasive electron microscopy with interaction-free quantum measurements
(2009)Physical Review AWe propose the use of interaction-free quantum measurements with electrons to eliminate sample damage in electron microscopy. This might allow noninvasive molecular-resolution imaging. We show the possibility of such measurements in the presence of experimentally measured quantum decoherence rates and using a scheme based on existing charged particle trapping techniques.Journal Article -
Design of Distributed Decentralized Estimators for Formations with Fixed and Stochastic Communication Topologies
(2009)AutomaticaThis paper proposes a solution to the problem of synthesizing distributed decentralized estimators for a formation of agents. The collected dynamics of the formation are modeled by a discrete LTI system. In the considered estimation structure each agent of the formation carries an estimate of the entire formation state. Agents of the formation can communicate information between each other through unidirectional links modeled with a ...Journal Article -
Adiabatic ionization potential of acetic acid and torsional dynamics of its cation
(2009)The Journal of Chemical PhysicsPulsed-field-ionization zero-kinetic-energy photoelectron spectroscopy and supersonic cooling are used to investigate the CH3 torsional dynamics of the acetic acid cation and to determine an accurate value for the first adiabatic ionization potential of acetic acid (IP=85 912±5 cm−1), which has been the subject of debates for more than 40 yr. A doubling of the torsional barrier upon ionization is due to a significant shortening of the C–C ...Journal Article -
Correlations between polarisation states of W particles in the reaction e-e+→W-W+ at LEP2 energies 189-209 GeV
(2009)The European Physical Journal CIn a study of the reaction e − e +→W − W + with the DELPHI detector, the probabilities of the two W particles occurring in the joint polarisation states transverse–transverse (TT), longitudinal–transverse plus transverse–longitudinal (LT) and longitudinal–longitudinal (LL) have been determined using the final states WW→lνqq¯ (l=e,μ). The two-particle joint polarisation probabilities, i.e. the spin density matrix elements ρ TT , ρ LT , ρ ...Journal Article -
Inclusive single-particle production in two-photon collisions at LEP II with the DELPHI detector
(2009)Physics Letters BA study of the inclusive charged hadron production in two-photon collisions is described. The data were collected with the DELPHI detector at LEP II. Results on the inclusive single-particle pT distribution and the differential charged hadrons d σ / d pT cross-section are presented and compared to the predictions of perturbative NLO QCD calculations and to published results.Journal Article -
NOx production by lightning in Hector: first airborne measurements during SCOUT-O3/ACTIVE
(2009)Atmospheric Chemistry and PhysicsDuring the SCOUT-O3/ACTIVE field phase in November–December 2005, airborne in situ measurements were performed inside and in the vicinity of thunderstorms over northern Australia with several research aircraft (German Falcon, Russian M55 Geophysica, and British Dornier-228. Here a case study from 19 November is presented in detail on the basis of airborne trace gas measurements (NO, NOy, CO, O3) and stroke measurements from the German ...Journal Article -
For Some Histories of Greek Mathematics
(2009)Science in ContextThis paper reviews contemporary interpretations of classical Greek geometry, and offers a Deleuzian, post structural alternative. We emphasize the embodied aspect of Greek mathematical practice, and indicate how it conflicts with ideal linear-modular accounts. Our main theoretic tools are the notions of 'catastrophe' and 'haptic eye' as reconstructed by Deleuze in his analysis of the artistic practices of painter Francis Bacon.Journal Article -
