Abstract
The development of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technologies provides space-borne imaging resolution on the meter scale and does not depend on cloud cover or daylight in contrast to optical imaging. Ground measurements provide valuable data at one point but are of limited value for extended areas due to the high spacial variability of the snow cover. The satellite mission TerraSAR-X equipped with a X-band SAR system with a frequency of 9,65 GHz provides dual polarimetric radar scenes with a resolution of 3.5 m, which allow multi-pass interferometric acquisitions with a temporal resolution of 11 days. The GHz-frequencies penetrate the snow cover but are also partially backscattered by the snow volume. Exploiting the complex phase of high resolution interferograms with different polarisations could give access to snow cover related parameters, while the volume sensitivity depends strongly on the geometry and the time difference between acquisitions. In my talk I will show two methods (the random volume over ground model (RVoG) and differential interferometric SAR (DIFSAR)) and their current results and/or limitations as well as future projects within the context of my PhD thesis to avoid temporal decorrelation and geometrical problems, which still avoid the detection of snow layers.
