Dependence of Crater Formation in Dry EDM on Electrical Breakdown Mechanism
(2016)Procedia CIRP ~ 18th CIRP Conference on Electro Physical and Chemical Machining (ISEM XVIII)The research effort in dry electrical discharge machining (DEDM) has increased during the last years. The process has advantages in comparison with EDM in oil-based dielectric media, such as low tool electrode wear, thin recast layers on the work piece surface and much more environmentally friendly conditions. However, the plasma-material surface interactions involved in dry EDM are not properly explained yet. Therefore, a characterization ...Conference Paper -
On the optimal control problem for a class of monotone bilinear systems
(2016)Proceedings of the 22nd International Symposium on Mathematical Theory of Networks and SystemsWe consider a class of positive systems in which the control signal enters bilinearly with the state. Such dynamics arise naturally, for example, from modeling the evolutionary dynamics of HIV in the presence of drug therapy. For this class of system, we formulate an infinite horizon optimal control problem and show that the optimal control signal is constant over time. We further extend our results to the case of uncertain dynamics and ...Conference Paper -
Diamond sensors for future high energy experiments
(2016)Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment ~ Proceedings of the 10th International “Hiroshima” Symposium on the Development and Application of Semiconductor Tracking DetectorsWith the planned upgrade of the LHC to High-Luminosity-LHC [1], the general purpose experiments ATLAS and CMS are planning to upgrade their innermost tracking layers with more radiation tolerant technologies. Chemical Vapor Deposition CVD diamond is one such technology. CVD diamond sensors are an established technology as beam condition monitors in the highest radiation areas of all LHC experiments. The RD42-collaboration at CERN is leading ...Conference Paper -

Development and Application of an Eco-design Tool for Machine Tools
(2016)Procedia CIRP ~ The 23rd CIRP Conference on Life Cycle EngineeringImproving the energy efficiency of machine tools is one of the challenges regarding the European energy saving goals. This work presents a new tool, enabling an effective quantification of a machine tool's (MT) energy consumption during all life phases. Scope of the presented tool is the fast and efficient estimation of a MT's cumulated energy demand and the systematic derivation of improvement measures regarding ecological performance. ...Conference Paper -
Post-Coating Treatment of Cutting Edge for Drilling Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CFRP)
(2016)Procedia CIRP ~ 7th HPC 2016 – CIRP Conference on High Performance CuttingDrilling of highly abrasive carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) requires carbide tools with geometrical highly adaptable tool geometries andwear resistant diamond coatings. To counteract the tradeoff between long tool lifetime by preferably thick diamond layers leading to largecutting edge radii (bluntness), and the sharpest possible cutting edge to generate flawless machining qualities, the following ...Conference Paper -

Recent Results from Beam Tests of 3D and Pad pCVD Diamond Detectors
(2016)38th International Conference on High Energy Physics, ICHEP 2016Results from prototypes of a detector using chemical vapor deposited (CVD) diamond with embedded resistive electrodes in the bulk forming a 3D diamond device are presented. A detector system consisting of 3D devices based on poly-crystalline CVD (pCVD) diamond was connected to a multi-channel readout and successfully tested in a 120 GeV/c proton beam at CERN proving for the first time the feasibility of the 3D detector concept in pCVD for ...Conference Paper -
Multi-horizon Modeling in Hydro Power Planning
(2016)Energy Procedia ~ 5th International Workshop on Hydro Scheduling in Competitive Electricity MarketsIn this paper, a novel modeling framework is proposed, the multi-horizon modeling approach. This approach allows a very detailed and transparent modeling of many problems in hydro power planning by simultaneously being computationally very efficient. The model is applied to a complex pumped storage hydro power plant in a liberalized market environment in order to give decision support for the self-scheduling of it. The modeling framework ...Conference Paper -
Integrating Variable Wind Power using a Hydropower Cascade
(2016)Energy Procedia ~ 5th International Workshop on Hydro Scheduling in Competitive Electricity MarketsIn this paper, we examine the ability of a hydropower cascade to balance variability from wind power. We consider a coordinated hydro-wind system that satisfies a single power balance, and we use a real-time control scheme to optimize system operations such that wind and load curtailment is minimized. The control scheme considers system hydraulics (including dynamic tailrace elevations and water travel times) and system constraints. ...Conference Paper
