  3. Frustration-induced quantum criticality in Ni-doped CePdAl as revealed by the μ SR technique

    Ishant I.; Shiroka T.; Stockert O.; et al. (2024)
    Physical Review Research
In CePdAl, the 4f moments of cerium arrange to form a geometrically frustrated kagome lattice. Due to frustration, in addition to Kondo and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions, this metallic system shows a long-range magnetic order (LRO) with a TN of only 2.7 K. Upon Ni doping at the Pd sites, TN is further suppressed, to reach zero at a critical concentration xc≈0.15. Here, by using muon-spin relaxation and rotation (μSR), we ...

  4. The metabolic fingerprint of Scots pine-root and needle metabolites show different patterns in dying trees

    Hunziker S.; Nazarova T.; Kather M.; et al. (2024)
    Tree Physiology
The loss of leaves and needles in tree crowns and tree mortality are increasing worldwide, mostly as a result of more frequent and severe drought stress. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) is a tree species that is strongly affected by these developments in many regions of Europe and Asia. So far, changes in metabolic pathways and metabolite profiles in needles and roots on the trajectory toward mortality are unknown, although they could ...

  5. Fault reactivation linked to rapid ice-mass removal from the Southern Patagonian Icefield (48–52°S)

    Tectonophysics
The Southern Patagonian Icefield (SPI) lies above an area of slow convergence between Antarctic and South-America plates, where limited seismicity is recorded by global and regional seismic networks. To understand the seismic behavior of this zone, we analyze two years of continuous broad-band data recorded by 27 seismometers, deployed around the SPI. Substantial ice loss coupled with the unusually low viscosity of the underlying mantle ...
