  1. DNA-Based Replication of Programmable Colloidal Assemblies

van Kesteren, Steven; Diethelm, Pascal; Jung, Se-Hyeong; et al. (2024)
    Small
Nature uses replication to amplify the information necessary for the intricate structures vital for life. Despite some successes with pure nucleotide structures, constructing synthetic microscale systems capable of replication remains largely out of reach. Here, a functioning strategy is shown for the replication of microscale particle assemblies using DNA-coated colloids. By positioning DNA-functionalized colloids using capillary forces ...

  2. EIGER. V. Characterizing the Host Galaxies of Luminous Quasars at z ≳ 6

Yue, Minghao; Eilers, Anna-Christina; Simcoe, Robert A.; et al. (2024)
    The Astrophysical Journal
We report JWST/NIRCam measurements of quasar host galaxy emissions and supermassive black hole (SMBH) masses for six quasars at 5.9 < z < 7.1 in the Emission-line galaxies and Intergalactic Gas in the Epoch of Reionization (EIGER) project. We obtain deep NIRCam imaging in the F115W, F200W, and F356W bands, as well as F356W grism spectroscopy of the quasars. We use bright unsaturated stars to construct models of the point-spread functions ...

  3. Building pondscapes for amphibian metapopulations

Moor, Helen; Bergamini, Ariel; Vorburger, Christoph; et al. (2024)
    Conservation Biology
The success of ponds constructed to restore ecological infrastructure for pond-breeding amphibians and benefit aquatic biodiversity depends on where and how they are built. We studied effects of pond and landscape characteristics, including connectivity, on metapopulation dynamics of 12 amphibian species in Switzerland. To understand the determinants of long-term occupancy (here summarized as incidence), environmental effects on both ...

  4. The economics of copyright in the digital age

    Peukert, Christian; Windisch, Margaritha (2024)
    Journal of Economic Surveys
Intellectual property rights are fundamental to how economies organize innovation and steer the diffusion of knowledge. Copyright law, in particular, has developed constantly to keep up with emerging technologies and the interests of creators, consumers, and intermediaries of the different creative industries. We provide a synthesis of the literature on the law and economics of copyright in the digital age, with a particular focus on the ...

  5. Projections and uncertainties of winter windstorm damage in Europe in a changing climate

Severino, Luca G.; Kropf, Chahan M.; Afargan-Gerstman, Hilla; et al. (2024)
Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences
Winter windstorms are among the most significant natural hazards in Europe linked to fatalities and substantial damage. However, projections of windstorm impact in Europe under climate change are highly uncertain. This study combines climate projections from 30 general circulation models participating in Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) with the climate risk assessment model CLIMADA to obtain projections of ...
