  1. EVALUATING SUSTAINABILITY IN SIMULATIONS OF AUTOMATED AND CONNECTED TRANSPORT

    Dadashzadeh N.; Agriesti S.; Sadid H.; et al. (2024)
    Transport and Sustainability
Early studies projected potential societal, economic and environmental benefits by the widespread deployment of Autonomous and Connected Transport (ACT) promising a significant reduction of transport costs and improvement in road safety. An effective way of assessing ACT impact is via simulations, where results are largely affected by the scenarios defining the ACT development. However, modelled scenarios are very diverse due to the huge ...

  2. Ultra-high spin emission from antiferromagnetic FeRh

Hamara, Dominik; Strungaru, Mara; Massey, Jamie; et al. (2024)
    Nature Communications
An antiferromagnet emits spin currents when time-reversal symmetry is broken. This is typically achieved by applying an external magnetic field below and above the spin-flop transition or by optical pumping. In this work we apply optical pump-THz emission spectroscopy to study picosecond spin pumping from metallic FeRh as a function of temperature. Intriguingly we find that in the low-temperature antiferromagnetic phase the laser pulse ...

  3. From failure to fairness: A call for accountability within household biogas development

    Boyd Williams N.; Tilley E.; Kalina M. (2024)
    Energy Research and Social Science
The purpose of this perspective piece is to advocate for a paradigm shift in biogas research, and argues for the need to centre accountability and justice in household biogas development research and discussion Drawing from biogas literature and the authors' own experiences in South Asia and Southern Africa, the perspective illustrates how a lack of accountability in biogas programmes has led to negative outcomes and harm to beneficiaries ...

  4. Nitrogen sequestration in the core at megabar pressure and implications for terrestrial accretion

Huang, Dongyang; Siebert, Julien; Sossi, Paolo; et al. (2024)
    Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta
Nitrogen (N) is the most abundant element in Earth's atmosphere, but is extremely depleted in the silicate Earth. However, it is not clear whether core sequestration or early atmospheric loss was responsible for this depletion. Here we study the effect of core formation on the inventory of nitrogen using laser-heated diamond anvil cells. We find that, due to the simultaneous dissolution of oxygen in the metal, N becomes much less siderophile ...

  5. Dense Continuous-Time Optical Flow From Event Cameras

Gehrig, Mathias; Muglikar, Manasi; Scaramuzza, Davide (2024)
IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence
We present a method for estimating dense continuous-time optical flow from event data. Traditional dense optical flow methods compute the pixel displacement between two images. Due to missing information, these approaches cannot recover the pixel trajectories in the blind time between two images. In this work, we show that it is possible to compute per-pixel, continuous-time optical flow using events from an event camera. Events provide ...
