Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering
The presence of bound water in clay has a significant impact on the physical and chemical properties of clay, particularly its strength, permeability, and creep behavior. In this paper, the bound water in clay has been studied from the perspective of water potential. Initially, the adsorption isotherms of powders and consolidated samples for Na-and Ca-bentonite and illite were measured, and the bound water content was determined by ...

  3. Effect of depolarizing field on domain structure of an improper ferroelectric

Müller, Aaron Merlin; Bortis, Amadé; Simonov, Arkadiy; et al. (2024)
    Physical Review B
We show that, contrary to common belief, the depolarizing electric field generated by bound charges at thin-film surfaces can have a substantial impact on the domain structure of an improper ferroelectric with topological defects. In hexagonal-manganite thin films, we observe in phase-field simulations that through the action of the depolarizing field, (1) the average magnitude of the polarization decreases, (2) the local magnitude of the ...

  4. Pit Morphology Characterization in Chloride-Exposed Reinforced Concrete

Yilmaz, Deniz; Angst, Ueli; Rossi, Emanuele (2024)
Chloride-induced corrosion stands as one of the most prevalent mechanisms causing damage to reinforced concrete, leading to a rapid loss of steel cross-section. In the evaluation of load-bearing behavior in existing structures, chloride-induced corrosion is typically assumed to result in an idealized loss of cross-sectional area in the reinforcement. This simplification arises due to a lack of understanding of the corrosion pit morphology. ...
