Abstract
The literature on the impact of the spatial structure on shopping behaviour reveals a divergence of opinion. Two opposing positions are very clearly identifiable: some believe shopping behaviour is not dependent on the spatial structure while others believe the opposite is true.
These contrasting positions constituted the grounds for conducting a more detailed exploration of shopping behaviour as part of the interpretation of the 2000 Swiss survey of the population’s travel behaviour. The underlying hypothesis is that, in addition to socioeconomic factors, the characteristics of the individual neighbourhood and the supply with shopping facilities have a relevant impact on shopping behaviour.
Models were estimated using SEM modelling, whereby shopping behaviour was defined by five variables – namely the share of shopping trips on all trips, the number of shopping trips by slow modes, by motorised vehicles respectively by public transport and by the daily shopping distance. The findings reveal that shopping behaviour is dependent on exogenous variables, especially the number of trips by motorised vehicles could be explained fairly well. The most important exogenous variables were the various socioeconomic variables and the supply with shopping facilities in the municipality and in the neighbourhood.
