Grain size distribution and magnetic characteristics of dust fall in Beijing on April 17, 2006
(2008)Quaternary SciencesGrain size analysis and magnetic method were applied to detect the characteristics of Beijing dust fall on April 17,2006.Similar to others deposition of modern aerosol,Beijing dust fall magnetic susceptibility is higher than the values of glacial loess.Day-plot,which compares the Beijing dust fall with a number of loess/paleosol samples from the central and west Loess Plateau, shows that Beijing dust fall is close to material from the ...Journal Article -
A legged anchoring mechanism for capsule endoscopes using micropatterned adhesives
(2008)IEEE Transactions on Biomedical EngineeringThis paper presents a new concept for an anchoring mechanism to enhance existing capsule endoscopes. The mechanism consists of three actuated legs with compliant feet lined with micropillar adhesives to be pressed into the intestine wall to anchor the device at a fixed location. These adhesive systems are inspired by gecko and beetle foot hairs. Single-leg and full capsule mathematical models of the forces generated by the legs are analyzed ...Journal Article -
Vision-based feedback strategy for controlled pushing of microparticles
(2008)Journal of Micro-Nano MechatronicsA strategy for controlled pushing is presented for microassembly of 4.5μm polystyrene particles on a flat glass substrate using an atomic force microscope probe tip. Real-time vision based feedback from a CCD camera mounted to a high resolution optical microscope is used to track particle positions relative to the tip and target position. Tip–particle system is modeled in 2D as a non-holonomic differential drive robot. Effectiveness of ...Journal Article -

Walking with WALK! A cooperative patient-driven neuroprosthetic system
(2008)IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology MagazineThe goal of this paper is to design WALK! a cooperative, patient-driven neuroprosthetic (NP) system. In implementing sensor-supervised events to switch to subsequent medical prosthetics, NP users were able to actively control the timing of their movements. Performance and usability of WALK! was appreciated by the NP users because they were able to perceive the activities of the NP to actually support their movements. The future of NP will ...Journal Article -
Exploring a modified conceptualization of imagery direction and golf putting performance
(2008)International Journal of Sport and Exercise PsychologyThis study investigated a modified conceptualization of imagery direction and its subsequent effects on golf putting performance. A progression in the directional imagery literature was made by eliminating the need for participants to intentionally create persuasively harmful images as they rarely occur, if at all, in the sporting domain. Thus, we explored a more ecologically valid conceptualization of debilitative imagery and measured ...Journal Article -
Diversity of begomoviruses associated with mosaic disease of cultivated cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) and its wild relative (Manihot glaziovii Müll. Arg.) in Uganda
(2008)Journal of General VirologyCassava (Manihot esculenta) growing in Uganda during 2001–2002 has been screened for the presence of begomoviruses using PCR-RFLP, cloning full-length genomic components and nucleotide sequence analysis. In contrast with a recent survey in neighbouring Kenya, which identified three distinct strains of East African cassava mosaic virus (EACMV, EACMV-UG and EACMV-KE2) as well as East African cassava mosaic Zanzibar virus and the new species ...Journal Article -
Herpes simplex virus induces extensive modification and dynamic relocalisation of the nuclear mitotic apparatus (NuMA) protein in interphase cells
(2008)Journal of Cell ScienceThe nuclear mitotic apparatus (NuMA) protein is a component of the nuclear matrix in interphase cells and an essential protein for the formation of mitotic spindle poles. We used herpes simplex virus (HSV), an enveloped DNA virus that replicates in the nucleus, to study the intra-nuclear dynamics of NuMA in infected cells. This study shows that NuMA is extensively modified following HSV infection, including phosphorylation of an unidentified ...Journal Article -
The UL14 Tegument Protein of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Is Required for Efficient Nuclear Transport of the Alpha Transinducing Factor VP16 and Viral Capsids
(2008)Journal of VirologyThe protein encoded by the UL14 gene of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and HSV-2 is expressed late in infection and is a minor component of the virion tegument. An UL14-deficient HSV-1 mutant (UL14D) forms small plaques and exhibits an extended growth cycle at low multiplicities of infection (MOI) compared to wild-type virus. Although UL14 is likely to be involved in the process of viral maturation and egress, its precise role in ...Journal Article -
