The PoW Landscape in the Aftermath of The Merge
(2024)On 15th September 2022, The Merge marked the Ethereum network's transition from computation-hardness-based consensus (proof-of-work) to a committee-based consensus mechanism (proof-of-stake). As a result, all the specialized hardware and GPUs that were being used by miners ceased to be profitable in the main Ethereum network. Miners were then left with the decision of how to re-purpose their hardware. One such choice was to try and make ...Other Conference Item -
Impact of working from home on workplace learning
(2024)This paper analyses how working from home affects workplace learning in terms of theoretical and practical knowledge during COVID19. We employ panel data gathered in monthly surveys of respondents in training companies between October 2020 and March 2022 to investigate this question. Apprentices in Switzerland are our case study. We address potential endogeneity concerns in two ways. First, we exploit variation across survey respondents ...Other Conference Item -

SUPClust: Active Learning at the Boundaries
(2024)Active learning is a machine learning paradigm designed to optimize model performance in a setting where labeled data is expensive to acquire. In this work, we propose a novel active learning method called SUPClust that seeks to identify points at the decision boundary between classes. By targeting these points, SUPClust aims to gather information that is most informative for refining the model's prediction of complex decision regions. ...Other Conference Item -
Quantitative Group Testing and Pooled Data with Sublinear Number of Tests
(2024)International Zurich Seminar on Information and Communication (IZS 2024). ProceedingsIn the pooled data problem, the goal is to identify the categories associated with a large collection of items via a sequence of pooled tests. Each pooled test reveals the number of items of each category within the pool. A prominent special case is quantitative group testing (QGT), which is the case of pooled data with two categories. We consider these problems in the linear regime, where the fraction of items in each category is of ...Other Conference Item -
A Representation-Learning Game for Classes of Prediction Tasks
(2024)International Zurich Seminar on Information and Communication (IZS 2024). ProceedingsWe propose a game-theoretic formulation for learn ing dimensionality-reducing representations of feature vectors, when a prior knowledge on future prediction tasks is available. We analytically find the value of the game and optimal mixed (randomized) strategies for the case of linear representations, tasks, and the mean squared error loss, and propose an algorithm for general classes of representations, tasks, and loss functions.Other Conference Item -
