The Thin-Disk Laser for the 2S – 2P Measurement in Muonic Helium
(2017)In the project presented in this thesis, a laser system for the spectroscopy of muonic helium ions has been developed. Five 2S-2P transitions were successfully measured in 2013 and 2014 using this laser system. Eventually the alpha particle and the helion charge radii will be deduced from these measurements with accuracies of few parts per thousand. These values will be benchmarks for nuclear structure theories, and bear information ...Doctoral Thesis -
Thinking through Peripheries: Structural Spatial Inequality in Johannesburg
(2017)In response to calls for formulating urban theories grounded in the everyday realities of space, this dissertation explores inequality and spatial structure in Johannesburg, South Africa. The research undertakes a multi-scalar analysis ranging from the urban region to the individual resident, in order to understand the reproduction of structural spatial inequality in greater Johannesburg. In doing so, it employs established tools from the ...Doctoral Thesis -
Computational Higher-Order Quasi-Monte Carlo for Random Partial Differential Equations
(2017)We consider partial differential equation (PDE) models which depend on random inputs and can be used to model uncertainties present in various applications in engineering and the sciences. Our focus will be on distributed inputs, for example an uncertain, spatially varying coefficient function, or an uncertain domain on which the PDE is posed. In the framework of uncertainty quantification (UQ), we are interested in computing expectations, ...Doctoral Thesis -

Leveraging Data Analytics Towards Activity-based Energy Efficiency in Households
(2017)Aiming for sustainable development means reconsidering the access to energy sources in industrialized countries, which are not faced with contingency scenarios that are implemented in emergent and newly-developed countries, to allow equal access to energy sources for all and thwart environmental degradation. The global penetration of renewable energy sources to replace fossil fuel and nuclear power plants means adjusting to stochastic ...Doctoral Thesis -

Individuals' Preferences for Distributing the Costs of Climate Change Mitigation:
(2017)OECD countries must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 to 70 % by 2050 below 2010 levels and reach near zero emissions by the end of the century in order to prevent global temperatures from rising 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Achieving these mitigation targets will be costly, which raises the question: who should pay for mitigation? The objective of this dissertation is to better understand Americans’ preferences on ...Doctoral Thesis -
Microscale Surface-based Bioanalytical Applications Using Microfluidic Probe Technologies
(2017)Compartmentalization is central to the study of heterogeneity in biological substrates in several areas of research in the life-sciences. For this, it is important to localize chemical reactions at the micrometer length-scale in immersed environments with conservative use of reagents and samples. Such controlled localization of chemicals on surfaces has been demonstrated in microfluidic systems wherein the small scale provides unique ...Doctoral Thesis
