Network Neutrality, Access to Content and Online Advertising
(2013)KOF Working PapersWe investigate the implications of Network Neutrality regulation for Internet fragmentation. We model a two-sided market, where Content Providers (CPs) and consumers interact through Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and CPs sell consumers’ attention to advertisers. Under Network Neutrality, CPs can have their traffic delivered to consumers by ISPs for free, while in the Unregulated Regime they have to pay a (non-discriminatory) termination ...Working Paper -

The Performance Effect of Environmental Innovations
(2013)KOF Working PapersWhile recent literature has focused on explaining the determinants of green innovations, it is not well understood how such innovations affect performance. To analyse the relationship between green innovation and performance, new industry-level panel data were exploited: these include 12 OECD countries, the whole manufacturing sector and a period of 30 years. The results show that green inventions are U-shape related to performance. ...Working Paper -
Developing Security Protocols by Refinement
(2013)Technical Report / ETH Zurich, Department of Computer ScienceWe propose a development method for security protocols based on stepwise refinement. Our refinement strategy transforms abstract security goals into protocols that are secure when operating over an insecure channel controlled by a Dolev-Yao-style intruder. As intermediate levels of abstraction, we employ message-less guard protocols and channel protocols communicating over channels with security properties. These abstractions provide ...Report -
Regression estimators in forest inventories with three-phase sampling and two multivariate components of auxiliary information
(2013)We consider three-phase sampling schemes where one multivariate component of the auxiliary information is known in the very large sample of the so-called null phase ("almost exhaustive") and the second multivariate component is available only in the large sample of the rst phase, whereas the second phase provides the terrestrial inventory data. We extend the generalized regression estimator with partially exhaustive information to this ...Report -
Rationality of Direct Tax Revenue Forecasts under Asymmetric Losses
(2013)KOF Working PapersThe current debt crisis has shed light on the importance of accurate fiscal forecasts. In particular, the accuracy of revenue forecasts is central since they set the limit within which expenditure should remain in order to reach fiscal balance. Therefore, forecasting tax revenue accurately is a key step in the implementation of sound fiscal policies. The current paper contributes to the empirical literature on budget predictions by providing ...Working Paper -
Gateveys
(2013)KOF Working PapersThis paper describes how to use the R package gateveys to establish a transparent and reproducible aggregation work flow for longitudinal data stemming from business tendency surveys (BTS). Business tendency survey researchers are addressed in particular though the suggested work flow could also be applied to other processes that generate categorical data. The package has two main features: First, it provides functions to build an aggregation ...Working Paper -
A fault tolerant implementation of Multi-Level Monte Carlo methods
(2013)Technical report / Departement of Computer ScienceThe theory behind fault tolerant multi-level Monte Carlo (FT-MLMC) methods was recently developed and tested. These tests were made without a real fault tolerant implementation. We implemented a MPI-parallelized fault tolerant MLMC version of an existing parallel MLMC code (ALSVID-UQ). It is based on the User Level Failure Mitigation, a fault tolerant extension of MPI. We confirm our FT-MLMC theory by means of simulations of the two-dimensional ...Report -
Imperfect information and inflation expectations
(2013)KOF Working PapersWe investigate the updating behavior of individual consumers regarding their shortand long-run inflation expectations. Utilizing the University of Michigan Survey of Consumer’s rotating panel microstructure, we can identify whether individuals adjust their inflation expectations over a period of six months. We find evidence that the updating frequency has been underestimated. Furthermore, looking at the possible determinants of an update ...Working Paper
