An alternative to Ewald sums. Part I: Identities for sums
(1996)SAM Research ReportIn this paper identities are derived which allow to compute the Coulomb energy associated with emN/em charges in a central cell and all their periodic images. These identities are all consequences of one basic identity which is obtained in a simple and straightforward way. It is possible to extend the results to other types of potentials as well.Report -

The hp finite element method for problems in mechanics with boundary layers
(1996)SAM Research ReportWe consider the numerical approximation of boundary layer phenomena occuring in many singularly perturbed problems in mechanics, such as plate and shell problems. We present guidelines for the effective resolution of such layers in the context of exisiting, commercial emp/em and emhp/em finite element (FE) version codes. We show that if high order, "spectral" elements are available, then just two elements are sufficient to approximate ...Report -
Second order accurate boundary treatment for Cartesian grid methods
(1996)SAM Research ReportThe Euler equations describe the flow phenomena of compressible inviscid gas dynamics. We simulate such flows using a higher order Cartesian grid method together with a special treatment for the cells cut by the boundary of a body. We describe a new method for the treatment of the boundary where these cut boundary cells are maintained as whole cells rather than as cut cells, thus avoiding stability problems. The method is second order ...Report -

Specification of GMS system protocol (GSP) version 1.0
(1996)TIK ReportGroup communications require special support for name and address management, QoS support, and connection establishment. The group and session management system (GMS) is a distributed directory system which is specifically designed to support group communication infrastructures. This report briefly introduces the concept s of GMS, the data types available, and then gives the specification of GSP, the GMS system protocol. This protocol is ...Report -

Multidimensional Scheme for the Shallow Water Equations
(1996)SAM Research ReportThe Method of Transport was originally developed for the Euler equation in 1993 by M. Fey. He introduced the physical property of infinitely many propagation directions into the numerical method. Here, we present the extension of this method to equations with inhomogeneous fluxes, such as the shallow water equations. For efficiency reasons and to reach higher order accuracy certain modifications had to be made to the method, whereby the ...Report -
