Benefits of informing travellers in case of extreme precipitation events
(2015)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungOne expected effect of climate change will be an increase in intra- and inter-seasonal weather variations, including substantially more frequent and more severe weather extremes in several parts of Europe. A substantial part of the short term total economic costs caused by extreme weather events occur through an impaired transport system. This paper applies an innovative model-based analysis of the impact of weather extremes, taking the ...Working Paper -

Random Steiner systems and bounded degree coboundary expanders of every dimension
(2015)arXivWe introduce a new model of random d-dimensional simplicial complexes, for d≥2, whose (d−1)-cells have bounded degrees. We show that with high probability, complexes sampled according to this model are coboundary expanders. The construction relies on Keevash's recent result on designs [Ke14], and the proof of the expansion uses techniques developed by Evra and Kaufman in [EK15]. This gives a full solution to a question raised in [DK12], ...Working Paper -

Asymptotic dimension and small-cancellation for hierarchically hyperbolic spaces and groups
(2015)arXivWe prove that all hierarchically hyperbolic spaces have finite asymptotic dimension and obtain strong bounds on these dimensions. One application of this result is to obtain the sharpest known bound on the asymptotic dimension of the mapping class group of a finite type surface: improving the bound from exponential to at most quadratic in the complexity of the surface. We also apply the main result to various other hierarchically hyperbolic ...Working Paper -
Validation of the Swiss methane emission inventory by atmospheric observations and inverse modelling
(2015)Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics DiscussionsAtmospheric inverse modelling has the potential to provide observation-based esti-mates of greenhouse gas emissions at the country scale, thereby allowing for an inde-pendent validation of national emission inventories. Here, we present a regional scaleinverse modelling study to quantify the emissions of methane (CH4) from Switzerland, making use of the newly established CarboCount-CH measurement network and a highresolution ...Working Paper -
Effects of record length and resolution on the derived distribution of annual precipitation
(2015)Hydrology and Earth System Sciences DiscussionsTraditional frequency analysis of annual precipitation requires the fitting of a proba-bility model to yearly precipitation totals. There are three potential problems with thisapproach: a long record (at least 25∼30 years) is required in order to fit the model, years with missing data cannot be used, and the data need to be homogeneous. To overcome these limitations, we test an alternative methodology proposed by Eagleson(1978), based on ...Working Paper
