Revisiting microbe-metabolite interactions: doing better than random
(2019)bioRxivRecently, Quinn and Erb et al [1] made the case that when used correctly, correlation and proportionality can outperform MMvec when identifying microbe-metabolite interactions. We revisit this comparison and show that the proposed correlation and proportionality are outperformed by MMvec on real data due to their inability to deal with sparsity commonly observed in microbiome and metabolome datasets.Working Paper -
Meta Answering for Machine Reading
(2019)arXivWe investigate a framework for machine reading, inspired by real world information-seeking problems, where a meta question answering system interacts with a black box environment. The environment encapsulates a competitive machine reader based on BERT, providing candidate answers to questions, and possibly some context. To validate the realism of our formulation, we ask humans to play the role of a meta-answerer. With just a small snippet ...Working Paper -
Procedure and methods for the assessment of greenhouse gas emissions of flights at ETH Zurich
(2019)ETH Zurich committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from air travel by 11% in the next few years. The reduction shall be in addition to reductions achieved by the aviation industry. Flights taken by ETH’s employees and guests are included if they are paid for by ETH. Flights taken by ETH students are also considered, if they are part of their curriculum. Strategies for reducing emissions include avoiding air travel by increased ...Report -
Ohne Windenergie keine Energiewende
Working Paper -

Towards an Inclusive Future in AI
(2019)In response to the accelerating potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to transform our lives, various governments, multilateral bodies, and other organizations have produced high-level principles and guidelines for the ethical use of AI in recent years. Despite the staggering number of such documents (over 90 by October 2019), there appears to be a relatively high degree of convergence on the level of principles. «Inclusiveness» is ...Report -
Equilibrium particulate exposure
(2019)IGC Working PaperWe assemble global spatially disaggregated panel data describing ambient particulate levels and transport, population, and economic and polluting activities. These data indicate the importance of country level determinants of pollution, of the equilibrium process that separates or brings together people and particulates, of urbanization, and of the composition of economic activity and energy production. We then develop an Integrated ...Working Paper -
Strong structural controllability of signed networks
(2019)arXivIn this paper, we discuss the controllability of a family of linear time-invariant (LTI) networks defined on a signed graph. In this direction, we introduce the notion of positive and negative signed zero forcing sets for the controllability analysis of positive and negative eigenvalues of system matrices with the same sign pattern. A sufficient combinatorial condition that ensures the strong structural controllability of signed networks ...Working Paper -
