The impact of COVID-19 on mobility choices in Switzerland
(2021)We study the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated government measures on individual mobility choices in Switzerland. Our data is based on over 1,000 people for which we observe all trips during eight weeks before the pandemic and again for up to 6 months after its onset. We find an overall reduction of travel distances by 60 percent, followed by a gradual recovery during the subsequent reopening of the economy. Whereas driving ...Working Paper -
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on activity time use and timing behavior in Switzerland
(2021)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungThis paper analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on activity time use and timing behaviour in Switzerland. The evaluation is based on mobility tracking data collected in Switzerland during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has affected the way how people spend their time and schedule their activities throughout the day, subsequently creating new activity patterns. Due to the rare occurrences of pandemics in the recent past, little ...Working Paper -

Effect of Covid-19 and the enacted policy measures on individual travel behavior
(2020)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungBetween August 2019 and January 2020, we carried out a large-scale tracking study involving 3,000 people in Switzerland. Participants were tracked using the GPS –based travel diary app “Catch my Day” for a total of 8 weeks based on a rolling recruitment design. The app recorded travel choices and imputed the chosen travel mode. Although the study was officially finished by the end of January 2020 and participants had received ...Working Paper -
A national-scale mobility pricing experiment using GPS tracking and online surveys in Switzerland
(2020)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungThis article presents the first results and observations from the MOBIS Study, a nation-wide mobility pricing field experiment in Switzerland. Mobility pricing is widely regarded as a promising policy measure to combat congestion, internalize external costs of transport, and offset decreasing fuel tax revenues. However, the implementation of mobility pricing in Switzerland is hindered by a lack of empirical evidence, among other things. ...Working Paper -
Observed impacts of COVID-19 on travel behaviour in Switzerland based on a large GPS panel
(2020)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungIn Switzerland, strict measures as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic were imposed on March 16, 2020, before being gradually relaxed from May 11 onwards. We report the impact of these measures on mobility behaviour based on a GPS tracking panel of 1,439 Swiss residents. The participants were also exposed to online questionnaires. The impact of both the lockdown and the relaxation of the measures are presented. Reductions of around 60% ...Working Paper -
Tracing the Sars-CoV-2 impact
(2020)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungThis note describes the changes in travel behaviour due to the restrictions imposed to slow the spread of the Sars-CoV-2 epidemic in Switzerland. The existing analyses of the Google or the national Intervisa data have limits due to missing socio-demographic details about their users. We briefly describe our GPS tracking panel and its sample. The analyses focus on the changes for different income groups and for the differences in accessibility. ...Working Paper -
mixl
(2019)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungThis paper introduces mixl , a new R package for the estimation of advanced choice models. The estimation of such models typically relies on simulation methods with a large number of random draws to obtain stable results. mixl uses inherent properties of the loglikelihood problem structure to greatly reduce both the memory usage and runtime of the estimation procedure for specific types of mixed multinomial logit models. Functions for ...Working Paper
