How much does it burn? Profiling the energy model of a Tofino switch
(2023)The ICT sector, in which the Internet plays a significant role, is growing rapidly, and along with it, the amount of power required to maintain its infrastructure. This includes powering various devices such as routers and switches, but currently, we lack sufficient knowledge about their power profile. This thesis brings a piece to the puzzle by power profiling the WEDGE100BF32Q, a commercial, programmable switch intended for data centers. ...Student Paper -
Modeling Choice in Co-Design
(2021)This report describes a method for modeling free and forced choice within Co-Design. In a free choice among a set, one has control over which option is selected, while in a forced choice one does not. Given a preorder P describing resources or functionalities, a free choice among a subset of P acts like a meet. Dually, a forced choice acts like a join. Moreover, the two types of choice distribute over one another. Based on this, we construct ...Student Paper -
Optimization of solid waste collections in Blantyre, Malawi
(2023)Project report for optimization of solid waste collections in Blantyre, Malawi. In this project, the waste generation at skips was estimated. Following this, an analytical optimization model is used to give weekly collection schedules and operation cost estimates. Several scenarios based on available equipment are compared. Finally, recommendations for further research are made.Student Paper -

Proboscis search & rescue. Worm-like Softrobot for Search and Rescue Missions
(2018)Even though earthquakes are older than mankind, rescue equipment is still quite rudimentary. Currently, buried victims can be located with dogs or drones, but to reach them, large amounts of debris and other obstacles have to be removed carefully. This can take several days as heavy machinery and a lot of manpower is required. The goal of Focus Project Proboscis is to shortcut the rescue process and work on a physical solution to ...Student Paper -
Compiling JSONiq Queries to Native Machine Code
(2021)JSONiq is a querying language specifically tailored for JSON files, whose key capability is to deal with unorganized and heterogeneous data. However, this benefit comes at a computational cost. The current implementations usually do not have any optimization on homogeneous data. In some cases, these optimization exists but are however limited. As a result, a substantial amount of overhead can be removed when considering homgenous data. ...Student Paper -
Bin it - Design of an absorbent hygiene product waste collection model for informal settlements in South Africa
(2023)Until today, several low-income communities living in formal and informal settlements in South Africa don’t have access to municipal waste collection, leaving the residents behind with a huge amount of waste generated day by day. Parts of the solid household waste (SHW) accumulated are absorbent hygiene products (AHP). They are designed to absorb human fluids over various stages of life. Improperly disposed AHPs form a serious risk on ...Student Paper -
Design and Validation of a Thermal Disinfection Unit for Wastewater using Biogas in Humanitarian Crisis Situations
(2022)Adequate wastewater treatment, especially in humanitarian crisis situations is an unsolved challenge globally. The difficulty thereby is often related to the availability of treatment technologies itself but the availability or rather absence of resources to run these system such as e.g. fuels or electricity. If wastewater is discharged untreated, the spread of pathogens and thus diseases increases rapidly through cross contamination ...Student Paper -
Space Geodesy Project Report
(2023)This research aimed to address the challenge of improving the reliability of the Water- GAP Global Hydrology Model (WGHM) using the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite data as a benchmark. Our problem was defined by the need to align WGHM Total Water Storage Anomaly (TWSA) data more closely with the reliable GRACE satellite measurements to enhance the simulation quality. We developed a method employing a Gaussian ...Student Paper -
CEU (Centros Educacionair Unificados) : Translating socio-democratic values through the formation of community integrated educational spaces
(2017)The CEUs, or Unified Education Centres (Centros de Educacao Unificados) are public facilities conceived as local centres of urban life, located in the peripheral and disenfranchised areas of São Paulo, Brazil. The facilities are intended for education, culture and sport and are for both school students and the surrounding community. The centres were developed by the Municipal Buildings Department (EDIF), and designed by the architects ...Student Paper
