Abstract
Hydro-abrasive erosion negatively affects the energy and cost efficiency of hydropower plants (HPPs). To optimize their operation, temporary shutdowns during exceptionally high suspended sediment loads are an option. In a case study at HPP Fieschertal with large, hard-coated Pelton turbines, a threshold value of suspended sediment concentration (SSC), above which the operation becomes unprofitable, was estimated as 15 g/l (15 000 ppm) based on nine years of detailed measurements.
