Abstract
This paper presents a study of the collective dynamics of a group of $n$ homogeneous vehicles traveling on a ring-road using the Optimal Velocity Model (OVM). We incorporate driver reaction time in the model, treating the vehicle as a time-delay system, to accurately capture real-world traffic scenarios. Analyzing the stability of time-delay systems is more complicated than for non-delayed systems, and so we investigate the stability of the equilibrium motion regime where all vehicles maintain the same speed and spacing, first through linearization and analyzing the effects of model parameters. We then extend our analysis to the full nonlinear model and determine the region of attraction for the equilibrium by solving Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) and estimating ellipsoids. These results can contribute to a better understanding of the collective behavior of vehicles in traffic flow and provide insights for the design of efficient control strategies. Show more
