Advances in Deep Learning: Towards Robustness, Multimodality, and Zero-Shot Abilities
(2024)This thesis focuses on challenges in three critical aspects of deep learning within the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI): robustness, multimodality and zero-shot abilities. Throughout our studies, we show that despite making remarkable process in various downstream applications, deep learning models are still vulnerable to adversarial attacks, which might even pose safety issues when models are deployed for real-world applications. ...Doctoral Thesis -
Risk-Based Evaluation of the Microbial Water Quality in On-Site Non-Potable Water Reuse Systems
(2024)The availability of sufficient quantities of clean water is essential for human health and well-being. Unfortunately, freshwater is becoming increasingly scarce. On-site water reuse, e.g., at the scale of a household or a building, offers an opportunity to provide reliable quantities of water for non-potable applications without the need for centralized large-scale infrastructure to collect the wastewater or distribute the reclaimed water. ...Doctoral Thesis -

Electrostatic and Magnetostatic Force Computation With Shape Calculus and BEM
(2024)Local and global forces are important quantities of interest in electrostatic and magnetostatic settings. They are important for the mechanical design or analysis of an electromechanical system and their computation via numerical simulations is thus a valuable tool. They are obtained through post-processing of the numerically computed fields and, generally speaking, can be obtained via either a volume-based or a boundary-based approach. ...Doctoral Thesis -
Interplay of electronic order and structural distortions in correlated materials
(2024)In this thesis, I study correlated materials, specifically transition-metal oxides with a perovskite or double-perovskite structure. In the considered materials – CaFeO₃, Ba₂MgReO₆, KCuF₃, and LuNiO₃ – the transition metals have open d shells with strong local electron-electron interactions, which localizes these d electrons and makes the materials prone to symmetry breaking and electronic ordering. This electronic ordering is accompanied ...Doctoral Thesis -
Hyperspectral long-distance metrology using a femtosecond laser supercontinuum
(2024)Rapid and accurate distance measurements over ranges from tens of meters to kilometers are essential in various applications, such as large-scale industrial manufacturing, alignment of particle accelerators, surveying, and three-dimensional (3D) digitization of our environment. Conventionally, electro-optical distance measurement (EDM) techniques based on nearly monochromatic laser sources are widely used in such applications. The measurement ...Doctoral Thesis -
Recovery of missing frequency information in coherent diffraction imaging
(2024)With the rise of AI-driven applications, computational power is more important than ever. Advancements in these technologies necessitate greater computational power, driving the need for more compact integrated circuit sizes. The current leading technology for the manufacturing of semiconductor devices is Extreme Ultra Violet Lithography (EUVL). The reliable actinic metrology of EUV photomasks is a cornerstone of the lithography ecosystem. ...Doctoral Thesis -
Randomising in and over Seismology
(2024)This thesis presents a collection of works centered on computational statistics in Bayesian seismology. Bayesian seismology interprets inverse problems in seismology as questions of inference, striving not to produce a single answer to an inverse problem, but to ascribe a probability to all possible solutions. To avoid evaluating every potential solution, or scenario, algorithms from computational statistics are necessary. However, the ...Doctoral Thesis
