Hybrid Art Spaces
(2020)Over the past decades, we saw a proliferation of data that was generated in cities and, at the same time, a growing complexity of urban planning tasks. The advent of social media — including a variety of geographic, temporal and so- cial metadata, has created an abundant (big) data source waiting to be explored and put to use for planning. This dissertation aims to add to the discourse on smart cities and human-centred planning, or so-called ...Doctoral Thesis -
Between buildings and free factor complexes
(2020)The main achievement of this thesis is the construction of a new family of simplicial complexes interpolating between Tits buildings and free factor complexes. For every finite graph G, we obtain a simplicial complex CC associated to the outer automorphism group of the right-angled Artin group AG. These complexes are defined using the intersection patterns of cosets of parabolic subgroups. Each of them is homotopy Cohen–Macaulay and in ...Doctoral Thesis -
Mechanical Characterization of Integrally-Attached Timber Plate Structures: Experimental studies and macro modeling technique
(2020)Spurred by the recent advancements in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Integral Mechanical Attachment (IMA) technique has been resurrected. Using IMAs, connections between timber elements are established through their form, instead of using additional connectors. In light of this, a new design framework has been proposed to construct Integrally-Attached Timber Plate (IATP) structures. Despite the recent developments in architectural geometry ...Doctoral Thesis -
Building and controlling fluidically actuated soft robots: from open loop to model-based control
(2018)This thesis describes the creation and control of soft robots made of deformable elastomer materials and powered by fluidics. We embed soft fluidic actuators into self-contained soft robotic systems, such as fish for underwater exploration or soft arms for dynamic manipulation. We present models describing the physical characteristics of these continuously deformable and fully soft robots, and then leverage these models for motion planning ...Doctoral Thesis -
Making Citizens of the Information Age: A comparative study of the first computer literacy programs for children in the United States, France, and the Soviet Union, 1970-1990
(2015)In this dissertation I trace the formation of citizens of the information age by comparing visions and practices to make children and the general public computer literate or cultured in the United States, France, and the Soviet Union. Computer literacy and computer culture programs in these three countries began in the early 1970s as efforts to adapt people to life in the information society as it was envisioned by scholars, thinkers, and ...Doctoral Thesis -
Development of Novel Standardized Structural Timber Elements Using Wood-Wood Connections
(2020)Traditional wood-wood connections, widely used in the past, have been progressively replaced by steel fasteners and bonding processes in modern timber constructions. However, the emergence of digital fabrication and innovative engineered timber products have offered new design possibilities for wood-wood connections. The design-to-production workflow has evolved considerably over the last few decades, such that a large number of connections ...Doctoral Thesis -
A Structural Design Methodology for Freeform Timber Plate Structures Using Wood-Wood Connections
(2020)Over the past decades, timber has gained popularity as a sustainable building material because of the rising environmental awareness. Furthermore, the resurgence of timber has also been encouraged by the advent of the digital age during the 21st century. The development of computer-aided design programming and digital fabrication tools has stimulated significant advances in both architecture and engineering. Within this context, researchers ...Doctoral Thesis -
