Making Informatics Work for Everyone
(2010)Technical ReportsThis report has originally been presented to the Rector of ETH Zurich in March, 2008, as a white paper to discuss issues related to teaching basic competences required for the professional use of computers in the natural sciences at ETH Zurich. It describes how the challenges this raises have uncovered the need for novel approaches to realistically teach the use of computers. The report recounts how, with the support of funds from the ...Report -

Intergenerational transfers, lifetime welfare and resource preservation
(2006)Economics Working Paper SeriesThis paper analyzes overlapping-generations models where natural capital is owned by sel sh agents. Transfers in favor of young agents reduce the rate of depletion and increase output growth. It is shown that intergenerational transfers may be preferred to laissez-faire by an inde nite sequence of generations: if the resource share in production is su¢ ciently high, the welfare gain induced by preservation compensates for the loss due to ...Working Paper -
Does Membership on the UN Security Council Influence IMF Conditionality?
(2010)KOF Working PapersWe investigate whether elected members of the United Nations Security Council receive favorable treatment from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), analyzing panel data on the level of conditionality attached to (a maximum of) 314 IMF arrangements with 101 countries over the period of 1992 to 2008. We find a negative relationship: Security Council members receive about 30 percent fewer conditions attached to the loans that they receive ...Working Paper -
The Steiner tree reoptimization problem with sharpened triangle inequality
(2010)Technical Report / ETH Zurich, Department of Computer ScienceIn this paper, we deal with several reoptimization variants of the Steiner tree problem in graphs obeying a sharpened β-triangle inequality. A reoptimization algorithm exploits the knowledge of an optimal solution to a problem instance for finding good solutions for a locally modified instance. We show that, in graphs satisfying a sharpened triangle inequality (and even in graphs where edge-costs are restricted to the values 1 and 1+ for ...Report -
The effects of financial development on income inequality and poverty
(2010)Economics Working Paper SeriesThis paper examines the effects of financial development on income inequality and poverty. The results of both cross-country and panel data regressions suggest that inequality and poverty are reduced not only through enhanced loan markets, but also through more developed stock markets. We show that ethnic diversity and the distribution of land are significant and robust determinants of both income inequality and poverty. Finally, we find ...Working Paper -
Long-run effects of post-Kyoto policies: Applying a fully dynamic CGE model with heterogeneous capital
(2010)Economics Working Paper SeriesThe paper develops a new type of CGE model to predict the effects of carbon policies on consumption, welfare, and sectoral development in the long run. Growth is fully endogenous, based on increasing specialization in capital varieties, and specific in each sector of the economy. The benchmark scenario is calculated based on the endogenous gains from specialization which carry over to policy simulation. Applying the model to the Swiss ...Working Paper -
