A dynamic macroscopic parking pricing and decision model
(2017)SVT Working PapersResponsive pricing has been gaining attention in recent research, but its interdependency with searching-for-parking traffic remains still unclear. In this paper, a dynamic macroscopic parking pricing model is developed to maximize the revenue for a city, while simultaneously minimizing the total cruising time on the network. The methodology proposes new parking pricing formulations, and embeds them into a dynamic macroscopic urban traffic ...Working Paper -
Designing dynamic delivery parking spots in urban areas to reduce traffic disruptions
(2017)SVT Working PaperPick-up and delivery services are essential for businesses in urban areas. However, due to the limited space in city centers, it might be unfeasible to provide sufficient dedicated loading/unloading spots. As a result, this type of operations often interfere with traffic by occupying road space (e.g. illegal parking). In this study, a potential solution to avoid such disruptions is investigated: Dynamic Delivery Parking Spots (DDPS). With ...Working Paper -
Evolutionary modeling of large-scale public transport networks
(2017)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungA genetic algorithm to design efficient large-scale public transport networks is extended. It goes beyond existing approaches by incorporating a dynamic demand response towards both changes in the network and external disruptions. The algorithm is based on an agent-based (MATSim) simulation and tested for the city of Zurich. Compared to the existing public transport system, it proposes a sparser network with substantially higher frequencies. ...Working Paper -
Influence of pricing on mode choice decision in Jakarta
(2017)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungTo reduce traffic congestion, the Government of Jakarta is planning to implement electronic road pricing (ERP) for commuters who pass through arterial roads in Jakarta’s CBD area. This paper studies the implementation of ERP, which in this study is called contribution cost, by utilizing the recently introduced alternative choice model approach called random regret minimization (RRM). In RRM when deciding, an individual is assumed to ...Working Paper -
Development of Virtual Reality Cycling Simulator
(2017)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungThis paper presents a cycling simulator implemented using consumer virtual reality hardware and additional off-the-shelf sensors. Challenges like real time motion tracking within the performance requirements of state of the art virtual reality are successfully mastered. Retrieved data from digital motion processors is sent over Bluetooth to a render machine running Unity3D. By processing this data a bicycle is mapped into virtual space. ...Working Paper -
Holiday destination choice in a continuous activity-based microsimulation
(2017)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungAnalysis of long-distance travel demand has become more relevant in recent times. The reason is the growing share of traffic induced by journeys related to remote activities, which are not part of daily life. In today’s mobile world, these journeys are responsible for almost 50 percent of the overall traffic. Consequently, there is a need of reliable long-distance travel forecast tools. A potential tool is an agent-based simulation. Due ...Working Paper -
Direct and indirect effects of new high speed rail service: An empirical analysis using Japanese mobile phone location data
(2017)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungThe development of high-speed rail (HSR) is expected to significantly change the long- distance travel structure and transportation patterns. The changes are expected to be not only the increase in the number of tourists who use HSR service (direct effect), but also the change in the regional travel structures by encouraging the growth of several zones as network hubs (indirect effect). In this paper, a methodology to understand the change ...Working Paper -
Context-dependent models versus a context-free model
(2017)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungThe random regret minimization (RRM) model considers the relative performance of the alternatives and is therefore context-dependent. In RRM, an individual, when choosing between alternatives, is assumed to minimize anticipated regret as opposed to maximize his/her utility. There are three variants of RRM, the classical CRRM, the μRRM, and the P-RRM. There is also a further approach called relative advantage maximization (RAM). We compare ...Working Paper -
Impact of major road supply on individual travel time expenditure
(2017)Arbeitsberichte Verkehrs- und RaumplanungThis study estimates the impact of major road supply on individual travel time expenditure (TTE) using data on 30-year changes in transportation infrastructure and travel behavior. The impact observed shortly after the improvement to the road infrastructure is estimated from a data set that combines records on large-scale household travel surveys in the Tokyo metropolitan area conducted in 1978, 1988, 1998, and 2008. Linear and Tobit ...Working Paper
