Phosphorus burial in the ocean over glacial-interglacial time scales
(2008)Biogeosciences DiscussionsThe role of nutrients and their impact on primary productivity and the fluctuations in atmospheric CO2 over glacial-interglacial periods are intensely debated. One of the cornerstones is the role of phosphorus (P; in the form of phosphate). Suggestions as to the importance of P evolved from an earlier proposal that P actively participated 5 in changing productivity rates and therefore climate change, to the most recent one that changes ...Working Paper -
Single ice crystal measurements during nucleation experiments with the depolarization detector IODE
(2008)Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics DiscussionsIn order to determine the efficiency of aerosol particles of several types to nucleate ice,an Ice Optical DEpolarization detector (IODE) was developed to distinguish betweenwater droplets and ice crystals in ice nucleation chambers. A laser beam polarizedlinearly (power: 50 mW, wavelength: 407 nm) is directed through the chamber. The scattered light intensity from particles is measured at a scattering angle ofΘ=175◦inboth polarization ...Working Paper -
Does Aging Influence Sectoral Employment Shares? Evidence from Panel Data
(2008)KOF Working PapersOur study represents a first attempt to single out the effects of aging on the entire structure of the economy that is approximated by employment shares in different sectors. We find that even after controlling for the effects of other relevant factors—e.g. income per capita, share of trade in GDP, government consumption share in GDP, population size—aging does have a statistically significant differentiated impact on the employment shares. ...Working Paper -
Assessing the Impact of the ECB’s Monetary Policy on the Stock Markets: A Sectoral View
(2008)KOF Working PapersThis paper analyzes the response of the European stock markets to the monetary policy shocks by the European Central Bank using the heteroskedasticity based approach of Rigobon (2003). We find that monetary policy tightening has a heterogeneous impact on the Euro Area sectors on the day the monetary policy is publicly announced. Furthermore, we provide statistical evidence against the use of the popular event study approach when assessing ...Working Paper -

Oxygen isotopic signature of CO2 from combustion processes
(2008)Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics DiscussionsFor a comprehensive understanding of the global carbon cycle precise knowledge ofall processes is necessary. Stable isotope (13C and18O) abundances provide infor-mation for the qualification and the quantification of the diverse source and sink pro-cesses. This study focuses on theδ18O signature of CO2from combustion processes, which are widely present both naturally (wild fires), and human induced (fossil fuelcombustion, biomass burning) ...Working Paper -
Environmental impact of Swiss household consumption, and estimated income rebound effects
(2008)IED-NSSI Report EMDMHousehold consumption has an important influence on the environmental impact of a society. This research report introduces a method how the Swiss income and expenditure survey, which is designed mainly to get information about the households’ spending patterns, can be used to also retrieve information about the environmental impact of the households. As environmental pressure we focus on energy demand, and, derived therefrom, greenhouse ...Report -
Business Cycle Measurement with Semantic Filtering: A Micro Data Approach
(2008)KOF Working PapersIn this paper we develop a business cycle measure that can be shown to have excellent ex-ante forecasting properties for GDP growth. For identifying business cycle movements, we use a semantic approach. We infer nine different states of the economy directly from firms’ responses in business tendency surveys. Hence, we can identify the current state of the economy. We therewith measure business cycle fluctuations. One of the main advantages ...Working Paper -
The NAICU and the Phillips Curve – An Approach Based on Micro Data
(2008)KOF Working PapersIn this paper we propose a straightforward method to derive a non-accelerating inflation capacity utilisation rate (NAICU) based on micro data. We condition the current capacity utilisation of firms on their current and planned price adjustments. The non-accelerating inflation capacity utilisation rate is then defined as the rate where a firm feels no price adjustment pressure. One of the main advantages is that this methodology uses ...Working Paper
