On the linearization of graphs and writing symbol files
(1991)ETH, Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, Departement Informatik, Institut für ComputersystemeThe linearization of general graphs represented by pointer and record data structures is a problem often arising in computer programs. Whenever a graph has to be stored on or transmitted over a sequentially organized carrier, a form of linearization is used. A simple algorithm for this purpose is presented and a special application – the writing of symbol files as required by modern language compilers – is described in more detail.Report -

Grid alignment effects and rotated methods for computing complex flows in astrophysics
(1991)SAM Research ReportWe discuss some advantages and difficulties of Cartesian grid calculations on high Mach number flows. We show and explain strong grid alignment effects even in smooth flow regions and in steady state solutions. We present first order rotated schemes for the Euler equations which are able to overcome some of the difficulties, but still display strong dependence of shock positions and speeds on the underlying scheme.Report -
Classification of the Riemann problem for two-dimensional gas dynamics
(1991)SAM Research ReportThe Riemann problem for two-dimensional gas dynamics with isentropic and polytropic gas is considered. The initial data is constant in each quadrant and chosen so that only a rarefaction wave, shock wave, or slip line connects two neighboring constant initial states. With this restriction the existence of sixteen (resp. fifteen) genuinely different wave combinations for isentropic (resp. polytropic) gas is proved. For each configuration ...Report -
Concentration-cancellation and Hardy spaces
(1991)SAM Research Reportet $\upsilon^{\in}$ a sequence of DiPerna-Majda approximate solutions to the 2-D incompressible Euler equations. We prove that if the vorticity sequence is weakly compact in the Hardy space $H^1(R^2)$ then a subsequence of $\upsilon^{\in}$ converges strongly in $L^2(R^2)$ to a solution of the Euler equations. This phenomenon is directly related to the cancellation effects exhibited by "phantom vortices".Report -
On the definition of nonlinear stability for numerical methods
(1991)SAM Research ReportIn this paper a new definition of nonlinear stability for the general nonlinear problem F(u)=0 and the corresponding family of discretized problems Fh(uh)=0 is given. The notion of nonlinear stability introduced by Keller and later by Lopéz-Marcos and Sanz-Serna have the disadvantage that the Lipschitz constant of the derivative of Fh(uh) has to be known which, in many applications, is not practicable. The modification here proposed allows ...Report
